mash the throttle to get it to start

any time I try to start my svx after its been sitting (ie in the morning, or after work) the only way to start it is to floor the gas while it cranks and feather it. Usually after about 30- a minute of this it will fire. It then smells like gas, and the idle immediatly goes to 800-1000 not the 13-1400 "warm up" revs
the check engine light will come on at this point. sometimes it goes away after i drive. sometimes not.
If I make any stops, the /next time it will start right up. and again sometimes CEL that maybe goes away.
I had a infrequent phantom CEL before this that would sometimes just flash for a second or two but never gave any problems
The guy at the shop checked the fuel pump said the volts look good(?), replaced a temp sensor.I replaced the spark plugs 2 moths ago, new battery, and a bunch of other stuff
He thinks its a leaky injector which floods the chamber after it sits for a while.
the other snafu is that he doesnt have the connector to read the ecu so hes not 100% i should spend $500-$800 on injectors
what do you guys think?

Re: mash the throttle to get it to start

Have you bothered checking the codes? It's a very simple process listed in the how-to's.
Which temp sensor did you change? The one wire or 2 wire coolant temp sensor? This is sounding very similar to coolant temp sensor issues.

This was my first thought, as I went through a similar scenario.

Re: mash the throttle to get it to start

talked to my mechanic this morning. He did replaced the coolant temp sensor. he was finally able to read the codes an it was for the coolant temp, which was replaced with a new oem.
problem still persist so hes gonna test/check th ecu.
Question: If the ECU is "bad" what are my options?
if it is the ecu and I chip it would that possibly fix the problem? as opposed to replacing it?
thanks in advance SVX gurus

Re: mash the throttle to get it to start

There's 2 sensors. One for the ECU and one for the dash gauge. Did he change the right one? Is the code still there?

Sound like a very possible problem, also the smell of fuel points to that, but never had that problem myself, good luck..................G

Re: mash the throttle to get it to start

I personally never got around to checking the codes. I'm aware its pretty easy, but counting blinking lights is apparently too much work for me.
My mechanic did replace the ECU temp gauge. Maybe its the wires, as the car sat for years before I got it.
