Re: What if not an SVX?

8-series are nice cars, I've heard that they cost more to maintain than to buy as of late. But they look so good... Better than most recent Bimmers, IMHO. Even the 6-series looks bizarre from head-on, with too-low, too wide-set headlights.

An 850CSi would still be a beast of a car, even today. A Z8 is no slouch, either.

Re: What if not an SVX?

Since I don't have an SVX this is easy. Its in my sig, but ill open it up to the syclone as well. 4.3 V6 turbo with AWD...its an easy choice since it was about the same price new as an SVX. with the same mindset. make an AWD lux/performance vehicle that your company hasnt done yet.

Re: What if not an SVX?

Aside from my SVX I have a couple Imprezas and a 79 Trans Am

But if I wanted a replacement for the SVX, I'd probably go with an FD RX-7

Re: What if not an SVX?

Good idea. Let me first say that I love the SVX and I definitely wouldn't be where I was today if I didn't have it. If I didn't see that 94 lsi in the parking lot, I wouldn't like Subaru anywhere as near much as do now and I would have my alot of valued friends that I have because of it. AND I THANK EVERYONE THAT PUT THAT CAR OUT. Cause otherwise I'd love Honda's.

I did probably have a 95 Honda Civic Coupe.

But right now if all SVX were to magically disappear I'd probably get the car I have right now as a daily.

1999 Subaru Impreza 2.5RS Coupe (my second baby) or some other sporty Subaru.

WITH THAT SAID, THANK GOD FOR THE SVX!!!!!!!!!!!!

They are much like the SVX, in that if you get a well maintained one, it's not so bad...but get a neglected one, and it will be a huge money pit. My 840 was sort of a cream puff when I got it, my SVX...not so much. 8-series specific parts (body panels, interior bits) are extremely pricey because of the rarity, but they share many mechanicals with the 5 and 7 series, so those parts aren't as expensive or hard to track down.

Would have loved an 850CSi, (TT V12 ) but finances pushed me into an 840 instead (4.0L DOHC V8). The market for these cars completely tanked when gas got really expensive (and never really recovered), so you can pick one up cheap now. Unfortunately, not so when I bought mine in '06

One thing - these cars are HEAVY. Curb weight is roughly 4100 - 4200 lbs, although the handling is nowhere near as boaty and ponderous as the weight would suggest. Mine was upgraded with Dinan sway bars before I got it though, so that may have something to do with it...

Re: What if not an SVX?

Well lets start with the other cars that I currently have.
98 Lincoln MarkVIII swapped to a 5-speed
89 Mercury Cougar XR7 supercharged 3.8, 5-speed
91 Cougar LS, 393ci stroked windsor, and a 5-speed
80 Firebird formula, swapped to a 350TPI

If I didn't have the SVX, I would just still have those. Other cars that I want to get a hold of at some point are a 93+ supra, an 03/04 mustang cobra, an australian falcon to build a mad max replica, and one day I'll also build a shelby cobra replica.

89 Mercury Cougar XR7, supercharged V6/5-speed, one of 2209. Engine currently dead, replacement in garage being rebuilt.
80 Pontiac Firebird formula, 350TPI swapped in, car needs to be finished.

I've never understood why some people seem to find the svx to be a cheesy 80's car, similar in style to any of the many played out 80's sports cars - the kind that would be driven by greasy dudes who wear sweats and sport gold chains. Lookin at some of the rides preferred by my svx brethern, perhaps I've been blind to the truth the entire time. . .

Re: What if not an SVX?

The SVX is a truly unique car that had no niche. It's a chameleon, all things to all people. The first car to actually pull off the feat of a luxo/sport. Drive it easy & it coddles you in luxury, drive it hard, and it rewards a good driver. If it were introduced today, it'd likely be compared with the likes of Aston Martin, and Jaguar. As it was, back in the day, it was built to compete with the likes of the Porsche 928, and Acura Legend Coupe.
