Seeking location of shift interlock switch
I'm occasionally having to use the SHIFT LOCK button to get one of my cars out of park. Where is the interlock switch located, on the brake pedal mechanism, or in the console? Or does the problem more likely lie with the relay (which sounds to me like it's behind the dash)?
Thanks, dcb |

Re: Seeking location of shift interlock switch
The Shift Lock module is located underneath the center console adjacent to the e-brake. These modules often become faulty and cause the condition which you are describing.
Shown here circled in yellow:

Re: Seeking location of shift interlock switch
So what does one need to do to make it so they don't have to press the button? I have in the past disconnected that module without any luck.
Sometimes I hear clicking under the dash when I try to shift without pressing the button, is there perhaps something else faulty with my shift lock mechanism? |

Re: Seeking location of shift interlock switch
Replace said module.
We do have quite a few if you need one.

Re: Seeking location of shift interlock switch
Ah, so they started with that thing and built the car around it. What's it properly called?
Is there a how-to on console removal hereabouts? thanks again, dcb |

Re: Seeking location of shift interlock switch
This item is the "Shift Lock Control Unit". The console is easily removed.
First, the woodgrain (or gray) trim around the shifter pops off (no screws, but be gentle). Secondly, the two 4x10 comma-shaped trims on either side of the front of the console pull off and forward. This reveals one screw on each side (remove them) Third, the screws on the inside of the console must be removed (there are three underneath the felt at the bottom) Remove the trim below the brake handle (snaps into place) At this juncture, you can choose to remove the ebrake handle to avoid scratching it (2 screws) or slide the console creatively over it. This should help. I plan to do a bit of write ups once the weather is warmer.
