My nasty looking rear differential

Now that my SVX has been running fairly well for the last few weeks, I am starting to think about some of the other things that look like they need to be addressed. One of the things that I have noticed is that the rear differential is pretty messy looking. I was thinking of ordering a new gasket for it then attempting to fix it myself.

My question is does this look like it needs the gasket or does it look like something else is bad? And if I were to do the gasket myself, how hard is it, keeping in mind that I am just starting to work on my own cars and have limited experience. My other thought is to just take it to the garage and have them look at it, but I'd rather attempt it myself.

It is not leaving any puddles or drips but I don't think it should look this this. Anyhow opinions would be appreciated.

Thank
Sean

Gross. You ever opened that thing up? Might be about time to have a go at that.

mmmm...grungy. What about putting one of these on:

I'm pretty sure the bolt patterns match.

You think I should take it to a shop for an inspection, or would it be easy pop it off?

I have never even touched mine, so I don't know.

Actually I did touch it a couple times, but not more than a glancing caress.

Re: My nasty looking rear differential

Personally I wouldn't bother unless your going to take the cars to shows and put mirror's under it.

Most of them look like that at this age, it's not really leakage, just some that has seeped out over the years. If you spray it good with a degreaser and clean it, it will probably look good for another 12 years

If you want to remove it, it's not too hard, but IMO not worth it if there isn't a problem.

I think I just wrote up instructions in a post in the past few weeks...http://www.subaru-svx.net/forum/show...297#post564297

Thanks Hocrest that makes me feel better. I guess I'll spray it and check it periodically. In the mean time I'll take a look at those instructions in case I need them.

Re: My nasty looking rear differential

Thats an axle seal leak my friend... its probably not going to leak unless you have the car moving at considerable speeds... I would suggest getting to that sooner than later to save you from buying a new rear
