I was going to mention the later models had the HG issues too, but you guys beat me to it!

Definitely should put a timing belt on it and do a basic tuneup I think.

Update:

I called off the entire transaction because the seller tried to hide the fact that there was a head gasket leak by changing the coolant and the oil, but it did start mixing once running for 5 or 10 minutes. I offered to buy the car for $1250, issues included, but he wouldn't move from $2000 so I walked away from the deal.
