Rear Differential

Got my kid a 95 SVX ans we love it. However, major issue with the rear end. Went out about 500 miles ago. Replace the half shafts and differential with one I got off ebay. Mechanic said it looked fine. Anyway, last night my kid calls and there is major smoke coming out of both sides of rear end. I go look at the car and there is fluid all over the place and leaking bad. The car now sets in Autozone's parking lot. So, does this mean the rear end is out again.? Any help would greatly be appreciated. thanks...pat

Did you get a rear differential that matches the transmission's final drive ratio? The rear differential should be 3.545 geared.

Unless the transmission was changed at sometime to a 4.11 or 4.44.

Do you know the history of the car? Or was it recently purchased? Is the old diff still available for inspection? If so count the teeth on the ring and the pinion, divide the ring # by the pinion # and that will equal one of these;
  • 3.545 (Stock SVX ratio)
  • 3.7 (probably not)
  • 3.9 (probably not)
  • 4.11
  • 4.44
. If a swap was done that you're not aware of, you can't really trust any lable or stamping on the diff case.

If you end up needing any parts or anything after inspecting the rear end just let me know. Good luck with it.
