Yes. I believe that was in '97. Toyota had a separate air passage in the turbo that bypassed the restrictor. It was so deliberate that the turbo even had a plug for the extra air passage that snapped shut with a heavy spring when it was disassembled.

It doesn't get much more deliberate than that, and Toyota deserved what they got.

WOW... I didn't even know the details of it.... I knew it was something that had to do with a restrictor plate or something... So they deliberatly CHEATED???? WOW... That is pretty bad... Thanks for the info Pockets... Hey, is there a website that has a write up on that??

I don't know that there's a website with a lot of specific detail. I was wrong about the year, though - it was 1995, not '97. Every tiem I recall the details of this event, I get the year wrong. Some facts I seem to have a mental block against remembering not matter how many times I get corrected.

Wait.... I thought it was in 1999??? Cause in 1998 they were in the WRC with Carlos Siants driving the Corrola Rally Car.... I was in Australia in 1998 and remember seeing Toyota in the WRC... Did all this happen before then??? If so, what happened after 1999 to Toyota???

I believe they left the WRC to focus their efforts on Le Mans. They did pretty well in Le Mans, without actually winning, and they left that to focus on F1.

Maybe that would explain why Toyota has such a large budget in F-1 now... They don't do hardly any other Racing

Toyota

I was not really into rally much back then, so I guess I missed the banning of Toyota. That DID seem like a rather major violation. From hearing ex-Nascar stars and owners and crew chiefs tell stories about all the "tricks" they used to pull to have an unfair advantange (Does Penske or the Donohue estate have a copyright on that phrase?), it certainly follows that it has been, and is happening, in all forms of racing. If you get caught like BAR did, you pay the piper. I just wasn't aware of such a large penalty until you guys clued me in on the Toyota rally story. Thanks!

Don
