fuel filter replacement tip

when replacing your fuel filter, just buy new hose to replace the two going to and from the filter.

soooooooo much easier than trying to get the existing ones off. i bought an 18" piece at the parts store and it was enough (perfect, actually) to replace the two hoses. i remember it being a pain the last time i changed the fuel filter, but this time it was frickin' impossible to get those bastard hoses off. for the $7 i spent on new hose, it was well worth saving the skin on my hands, the time hunched over the engine bay, and the new curse words i probably would have created.

Those hoses are a pita. I usually grip them with a pliers and turn them to break them free from their superman bond to the metal lines.

I use liquid lighter fluid and a very small flat blade screwdriver. Use the screwdriver as a wedge between the fuel filter pipe and hose. This will allow the lighter fluid to penetreat. It makes the hose slide off like butter.

i just did mine and i gave up on prying i just took a knive and sawed them off at tip of metal. it left me with just enough hoes to attach back. the next replacement i will just change hoes i dont have enough to do again. they are a pain in azz to pull off.

After destroying the existing soft lines on the filter I was shown this technique. I used a little gasoline but it worked just the same.

I just use my hose removal pliers.

Really, they're pliers that spread vs. pinch. They have two jaws with 'V's laying flat against each other. The Vs straddle the tube with the side of one V resting against the end of the hose. One squeeze and voila!, it's off. Less than $10 and well worth the bux if you do very many. Works for other stuff too, like battery terminals, door panel clips, etc.

I just replaced my fuel filter after reading these threads. I used liquid wrench and it worked great, took me less than ten minutes to complete the job. Thanks for the ideas, it helps to motivate me to do the work myself.
