Strange lugs on the roof

I have just acquired a 1992 JDM car with two strange lugs on the roof. They are about one inch wide by 3/4 of an inch tall and emerge from the groove in the roof just behind the rear door pillar. It looks like they are attached to a small tube within the groove with a pin going into the tube from bothe the front and back of the lug. The lugs are going rusty and are a bit of an eyesore so I want to remove them. I have no idea what they are. My only guess is that were there to clamp something onto like a roof rack (but there are only two of them) or a set of police lights going across the roof. Any ideas? Any suggestions about removing them - my initial thoughts are just to separate the front and back hoping to pull the pins out of the tube.

Sounds like the fittings for the JDM ski rack option. The two front fittings were easy to remove but the rear two were more difficult so most JDM owners just left them.
