audio cover not going into place, cruise control not coming on

so i got an svx and i'm still getting used to it. a few things i found on the drive home: the cruise control does nothing when i hit the button. no LED, no dash light, nada. i'll check the fuse tomorrow but feel free to throw out ideas. also, the ABS light is on. check ECU for codes or is there a seperate ABS computer diagnostic? finally, the audio cover isn't staying in the up position. it swivels fine so i don't think the hinge is broken but it meets resistance with the stop on the left hand side too early to click into place. i've found this piece isn't secure, the stop and the rest of this piece are loose in this corner even though it appears to be in place. is the audio tray not all the way in or is something else wrong?

You should look through the how-to locker and http://svx-iw.com/ for more information about the SVX as you will find out a LOT about the car!

Sometimes the cruise button on the dash gets a little worn and you may have to press it a few times before the light comes on.

The ABS computer is located under the passenger seat and has an LED on it that flashes the code(s). You can life a flap in the carpet to see the LED.

Does your car have the stock stereo? It's possible the stereo cage was removed then not reinstalled properly.

p.s. Welcome to the site and enjoy your stay!

Try this:

With the car running, give your fuse box a swift kick. Use your left foot. Swing up and left.

My cruise control used to work perfectly. Then I had to toggle the switch a few times to get it to stay on. The light would always flicker, but went out when I released the button. The other day, it stopped working entirely. No light. No flicker. Nothing.

I'm about to go on a road trip when this happens, so I'm not amused. The timing stinks. I keep dallying with it until suddenly the ABS light comes on. The ABS light flickers, and then the power steering light comes on too. What the...?

So I pull over. Sure enough, no power steering, but the alternator light hasn't come on so the belt is fine. I crack open the fuse box and look for a culprit. I find the right fuse, pull it, and it looks good. I pull back on the road and the power steering light goes out. Yes! Back to only two warning lights again.

I keep screwing with the cruise switch. I'd like the ABS light to go away, but frankly the cruise is more important to me. Finally I give up, slouch down in my seat, and set my left foot on the footrest. The lights go out. Another victory. I kick the footrest again. The lights come on. Kick - lights out. Kick - lights on. Kick - lights out.

Now the cruise control light works perfectly. One press and it stays on. It still doesn't work, but the light comes on now. Everything else is functioning. ...just no cruise.

I haven't messed with it since. I plan on giving the fuse box a through inspection - you know - when I have time. :P

Anyway, hopefully this will give you a place to start looking.

I've found that if you steadily and firmly press the exact middle of the cruise control button it will contact the first time. I can get mine to activate 9 out of 10 times on the first push this way.
Secondly, if you do get the button to activate but the cruise won't set, check the vacuum hose on the driver's side firewall. That hose comes disconnected very easily.

Good advice MoneyPenny.

My cruise quit, I asked my Subaru expert, he plugged in the hose, everything is fine.

GRAM, since you are new to your SVX, maybe you didn't realize that the switch on the dash must be engaged, then the switch on the wheel.

Good luck and happy travels in your Time Machine.

See my SVX audio installation guide, especially section 2.6.4, step 10 (after reading the earlier section on how to open it up).
