My Dec'91 car imported from Japan has a tranny problem. It is constantly pulling 3rd gear, no other gear[except reverse] works, and it will eventually cook the clutch.
I have found a '95 box I can fit relatively cheaply. Can anyone tell me if there are major difficulties or differences between the '92 and '95 box that I would need to be aware of before purchasing the box? The '95 box should have the modifications and the stronger torque convertor [although the torque convertor in my box is OK], so I would expect to get good service from the change. Whatever fix I implement, I intend adding a supplementary parallel plumbed cooler and an in-line filter to keep cooling up to scratch. Also will fill with Redline Hitemp oil. Then I will give the car a serious work-out. Goody goody, as Hannibal Lecter might put it. Any advice on the box fitment appreciated. |

Hi, Your transmission is in "SAFE MODE", that's why only the 3rd gear and reverse are working. Maybe you should try to reset the computer (TCU) before doing anything else, disconnect the batery overnight and see how it works after. Also, check if there is any trouble codes.... In my opinion, the 92 and 95 should be the same.... I just had my transmission rebuilt, and it is not that expensive... it all depends how much you pay for the used one, it might be better to have yours rebuilt. Good luck Joe 90 |

Joe 90, thanks for the reply. Was beginning to feel unloved with no reply to this one for so long. Will try as you suggest, see what happens.

The "Safe mode" is used by the tranny to get you home in case of failure.... To diagnose the tranny, do the following: (this is not a joke) 1- with engine off, put the gear selector to D and push "Manual switch" On than turn ignition ON. 2- move selector to 3 and "Manual switch" OFF 3- move selector to 2 and "Manual switch" ON 4- move selector to 1 and "Manual switch" OFF 5- Slowly press on the accelerator, the "POWER" light will start to blink..... fast blinking = no trouble recorded long blink = 10, short blink = 1 ex: _ _ _ .. = 32 Let me know if you have a trouble code, I have the shop manual with the list of codes... Yes, "Safe Mode" gives me a lump in my stomach too. Let's refer to it by its proper name from now on, which is the "Limp Home Feature" (according to the manual). One of the greatest oxymorons in the world: Microsoft Works.

Had previously done both routines, Existing probs, blinking light = OK. Previous probs = 23,32,33. This time after clearance, both blinking lights, no memory of previous faults. More to the point, it will now pull away in 2, but I am affeared, it is still only finding 3 in the box, and does not upshift to Drive. Still progress of a sort, it would not pull away in 2 before. In first, it still does the same, attempts to find forward, gives a lurch, pulls rev for a half second, then just sits there. Reckon the problem I have is mechanical, clutches sticking or somewhat. Looks like you'll need a rebuild, I just got mine back last week... It was in for a rebuild too. My symptoms were that it was "slipping" between the second and third gear (engine reving-up) and the engine brake was not affected when lever was put in 2nd... The parts that were replaced are the "high clutch" assembly, the "drum" and the "brake band" I saw the parts but don't ask me what they do. All I Know is that my wallet in $2000 (Can) lighter... But the car drives beatiful now.... In fact, I had this car for a little over 2 years now and it has never performed this well before! I'm in love again I hope there's a reputable transmission shop in your area that can fix yours. Good luck! Joe 90 |
