here is an oil filter study

http://www.scuderiaciriani.com/rx7/oil_filter_study/

After I read that I change over to using NAPA Gold filters

I run mobil 1 10W30 with SuperSyn, but its pricey at about $4.25 a QT at Wal Mart

I only pay $3.83 QT but i got a friend that works at Wal Mart so 10% off for me. YA

I would advise against using synthetic at this stage unless you want to start replacing all the leaking seals. Just use a good quality dino oil and change it often.

Subaru OEM filters are good and so are Purolators.

That's a long time between oil changes.

How many of those miles are yours?

I like regular mobil 10w-30 and Subaru filters.

ohh jeez...I'm sure you will get as many different answers to this question as there are members that post!

But really, if you change oil and filters regularly using the 3 month/3000 mile rule with name-brand products you cannot go wrong.

There is also widely varying opinions on the question whether or not it's safe to use synthetic on a used car with several thousand miles on the clock - and I could show you documentation to back up either side. Personally I've done that with no ill effect. I've always thought that in the long run, your engine is better off with synthetic and a few drips on the floor than with dino oil and no drips!

I use Mobil 1 synthetic and either Fram or Purolator filters. Subaru OEM filters are good too, they even come with the oil drain plug gasket....

Right or wrong, I've taken that position, as well. I switched my car to Mobil 1 well after the car had 100k miles on it. Yeah, it leaks a little more, but I'll deal with it. I did replace the front main seal, though, because it was leaking quite a bit. Now the car only loses 1 quart a year at 3000 miles per year.

switching to synthetic

I switched to synthetic right after I purchased my car with 128,000 miles on the ODO.

In the 5 K miles since then the leaks (next to none) are no different: enough that I suspect that the leaking seal theory might just have originated on the grassy knoll....

Buy the best Fram filter you can find and switch to synthetic: better late than never

Hotshoe

incidently every car on my list is on synthetic and NONE were purchased new

I switched to all 3 SVXes and the Outback to Mobil 1. I got zero leaks from the engine. When I switched to synth ATF, It took about 1 1/4 y3ears for the drips to stop on the 92 Pearlie. It hasn't leaked at all on the 94. Both cars were switched at 80k miles.

Go Figure.
