Tranny problem! Please help!
Hi guys, my name is Peter and I am from Czech Republic, Europe. I am new
to this group, one week ago I bought 95 SVX, burgundy. I has 188 000 km/117 500 miles on it. It is in good condition except paint (I have to paint it all:-(). I have some question about transmission. As I have papers the new transmission was instaled when it had 160 000km/100 000 miles. After buying it I let local Subaru dealer to change every fluid, belt, filter in engine and they also changed ATF (car was sitting at garage not moving for one year). Now there is Castrol SAF-X synthetic fluid and from this change I can observe some strange bahavior of transmission. When I start and put R, I can feal wrench and sometimes engine stops. There are also sensible wrenchs during shifting to upper gears and also sometimes to lower gears. I can also feel that engine revs goes little bit up while shifting. This only occure when engine is cold and these symptoms disapper after 15 minutes of driving. When it warms up it seems everything is ok, shifting is smooth and almost unnoticable. I use ECONO mode and this problems are usually when I drive at low speed. After pressing accelerator agrresively it is sifting ok. I am not a mechanic and so if you guys have some hints or advices I would really appreciate them. It is wonderful car (only 7 in Czech Rep.!) and I want to keep it as my hobby :-) I also own Subaru Impreza and I thought there is no other car to have fun more but now I find that it! SVX is incredible! Thanx for help and I pray that my tranny will not go to hell... Peter |

Re: Tranny problem! Please help!
I am not sure about all the grinding and noises, but my SVX has a problem with the Throttle Position Sensor, such that at low RPMS (< 2k) the shift from 2-3. However that sounds like perhaps only part of the problem; does the RPM flare happen in all other shifts as well?

Yes when it is cold revs are getting little bit higher before shifting but it is not I think too serious. I have read at Terry McLane FAQ web side that the brake band needs to be adjusted. I am worry about theses wrenches...:-(((

It's possible that the fluid they used is the wrong weight or has the wrong friction modifiers for the auto tranny.
Try replacing the synthetic fluid with the reccommended standard Dexron-III ATF and let us know what happens. |

There may be a problem with the line pressure at low speed. It is best to check with a gauge connected to the tranny. Another way is to disconnect the drop'g resistor and see if the cold running gets beter.
