Couldn't Afford It

Since I know can't afford another SVX I decided to buy a motorcycle last night. I went vintage. I don't know if there are any motorcylce guys in the club, but it is a 1983 BMW R65LS. It is beautiful, and it was a steal. Not the fastest but I love it. Anybody here know anything about those bikes?

BMW Bike

Congrats on you're bike! BMW cycles use a boxer as well ya know. Its a fine engine design for a cycle since the pistons firing outward provide for unmatched handling and balance. I just rode one of the new big Bimmer 1200s. It was amazing. So balanced, so comfortable. Would definately be a great bike. It it wouldn't require trading in 3 or 4 SVXs to get. As with most boxer engines the seals are an issue. Other than that you have a bullet-proof engine that should/could go well over 100k with basic upkeep. I'd prefer a Triumph Bonneville for a cycle and have managed to keep myself out of the dealership so far this year since I don't have the cash for another toy but I do admit I keep checking the paper for a cheap old Bimmer.

My machinist is an expert on all things BMW. He owns 6 BMW motorcycles from various vintages, along with many other odd and unusual bikes. I believe he owns an early 80s R65, too!

Let me know if you need any help diagnosing a problem, etc. etc.

You still need to come up here for the Dragon meet in May!

P.S. The car is doing great.

I've always liked vintage bikes. Some day I hope to acquire a 60s Honda.

I gave up a 1975 /75 last year for a new 1200 Sportster. It feels a lot like the torquey 650 Norton I enjoyed in 1970. I liked the Beemer a lot but it was, after many miles, needing attention. The BMW was smooth but if I want smooth now, I get in the SVX. Just picked up another 92 off ebay. I get an extended tour of New York City with the deal. First trip to the big apple for this Montana boy. "Where are those girls?" Then I'll go out on Cape Cod and back home.

A full set of bikes.

Before I become "the one arm bloke",

I used a BMW RT100 for touring with the best girl.

A 76 Ducati 750 Desmo Super Sports for high speed touring single seat.

A 72 450 Ducati Desmo Silver Shotgun for the mountain twisties and club racing.

A 250 WR Husqvarna for the forest fire trails.

A 250 Bultaco Alpina for climbing mountains

Now I just ride the Left Hand drive Bully.

You can't play golf with one club

Harvey.

welcome to the club of trying to preserve all things mechanical.

I've been the proud owner of one Norton or another since 1972 (with a couple of Hondas sprinkled in here and there). Currently have a 1975 Norton Commando - MKIII Roadster model (I'm the 2nd owner, mine since 1978).

Try out the site below (N.E. Florida BMW owner's club). There are undoubtedly national and international clubs to join as well. I'm a member of the International Norton Owner's Association (INOA) and find the people as friendly as those on this site (but they don't have as good a forum - they're still stuck on Yahoo). Best of luck, and I hope you enjoy your riding time.

Harvey, I'm surprised - the best girl not on the Ducati machines - I'm sure she would have had to hold on much tighter than on any BMW

Nice old ride. I tested one when they came out but too tame for me back then.

Now to justify middle age I bought a patriotic Cannondale enduro bike and 4 months later they go chap.11. Still a wild ride though-I want to license it for small road jaunts.

Bernice rode on the back of what ever I had. The 750 is not what I would call a touring bike, It is very much like the SVX 'a high speed' road runner. I had a dual seat for it, but with me stretched out over the 24Lt tank, Bernice had to lay on my back. Not to mention the lack of any luggage space. Hence the BMW RT100, more room to take the wardrobe

Although I worked in the Auto sphere, bikes have been my lifes interest, modifying, riding, racing is where you learn more than
in the Auto sphere. Bikes will allways be at the leading edge of technology.

Two weeks ago the factory GP Ducati ridden by Louis Caparossi ran 328 Km/hr 203 mph. and set the fastest time for the pre seasons testing. This was 1.8 seconds faster than the fastest Honda ridden by Barrios. Not bad for there first attempt, on a bike that did not exists 12 months ago.

Ducatis are built by bike riders, Hondas are built by technology

Harvey.

How come Phil? Can't afford a full set, or does he have a problem also?

Harvey.
