Just checking in

I can't let a day go by without checking in, even before I got the SVX. Sometimes, as I read about other people's problems, I get the hospital intern syndrome. "Egad, I've come down with that too!" But it usually goes away. I've learned more here about the car in these few months than I have about my other two in the years I've owned them. Great information, good fellow (and lady) ship.

I didn't see this one Michael, but I suspect it was good.

My son watches this, and while it runs, the soul of comedy and satire, the animus of Lenny Bruce LIVES!!

Backfired did it?

But I am not stupidly pedantic, accuracy is paramount in things technical.

Newbie to my svx

I traded my 97 jetta for my 92 svx. was all good but now am having tranny issues and a slight power steering fluid leak. Tranny issues are normal from what i gather and the power steering should be an easy fix. I'll be rebuilding my tranny for now to get me by until i have anoegh loot for the 5 spd swap. Any recomendations ar points of advise in general will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for having me.

Hi, my name is Anthony. I have been lurking a year now. I bought my son a 92 Bordeaux Pearl the transmission was bad but engine ran great every thing worked. Paint was ok interior was good. I called American transmission on Fuqua St. in Houston asked if they could fix it they said yes so I had it towed there. It ran for 2 month. I took it back they said it was internal and they would pull it out. They keep it at their shop for 5 months. They said the pinion gear was busted up and could not get a replacement. They started leaving the car out side by the street so brought it home. Now I’m out an svx and 2500

Hi Irish

You are very welcome.

I can't see anything wrong with your plan. You could possibly keep an eye out for a good spare tranny, and it is simple enough for a decent shop to do a swap of the units for you.

With the power steering check the How To locker. You will see a fix in there called the "O" ring fix. It is easy and also cheap.

As for any other help, if you clearly describe the problem or the request, there is usually somebody can offer help or advice.

Again, welcome to the Network!!

Joe

Hi there Anthony.

That is a sorry story, and it looks like the shop you picked was not up to speed with the SVX.

Same advice as for previous post, see if you can find somebody parting out and get a spare transmission. That's the cheapest way.

Look in the Parts For Sale section here. Anybody doing a 5 speed install will possibly have a spare transmission for sale. Also if you have breaker yards near you a Legacy 4WD tranny will work, though you might need to use the rear diff also to match the final drive.

These are cheap ways to get going, and once the car is fixed they are actually more reliable than it appears for reading the problems on here.

Oh, and Welcome! also, even if you are a long-time lurker

Joe

Smile Thanks guys...

Hello and thanks guys. I live in Melbourne; Australia and I have owned my SVX for 10+years now. I still luv it as much as the day I bought it, and it has been a wonderful friend and car.

I own a two-tone silver/charcoal SVX 4WD,4WS with a Dec 1991 registration, which I was told was one of the very first production models imported into New Zealand. I exported it to Austraia in 2002 with me when moving here. Couldn't part with it when I as leaving the country.

But I wanted to say thank you as I found this website after my car developed a stalling/surging issue which I was told by a Subaru dealership was a faulty Mass Airflow meter, which would take 6 weeks from Japan and cost me $1000! Not believing them, I turned to the net and found you guys. After reading the technical blogs and related stories, I realised this was a common problem and possibly related to an electrial fault in the Mass Airflow meter. So 2 days in an electrical shop and I have my car fixed, happy and running normal for $350. Thank you guys for that, and my mistrust of people who dont understand SVX's.

Will post a pic sometime soon. Cheers!....V.

Glad to be of service!

And welcome aboard!

P.S. Your car is my favorite color combination. Can't wait to see the pics.

That is what this site is all about. Helping other owners when they need it, and keeping this great car on the road.

Hello Vern, and welcome!

Did the electrical shop open up the MAF and solder loose connections? That is sometimes the problem.

I have a car the same colour as yours, and so has Earl. Mine is Version L like yours with 4WS, Earl's is the standard Japanese model.

Paul in New Zealand has the same colour scheme, though I'm not sure which model he has. Probably 4WS I would say. Here is a photo of Paul's:

I have yet to get a good pic of mine, but soon.

Joe

The only major question that comes to mind is if in the Southern Hemisphere, are the wheels suppose to go in the opposite direction?
