ABS coming on for no reason

Sometimes when I come to a slow stop by ABS will activate when there is no loss of traction. I also hear a cartoon like spring sound when it comes on, like a "doing" sound. Anyone have any ideas?

Check your tone wheel. There may be a break or a crack.

I will check for that. I read somewhere online that low brake pads can cause this. Is this true? I just changed these today.

Re: ABS coming on for no reason

The wear indicators didn't even make a peep. Another week and I would have had a new wear indicator.

Re: ABS coming on for no reason

Do you have any binding in the rear? When my transfer solenoid was dying and dead, the ABS would engage all the time because of the back wheels dragging. After I replaced it the ABS issue was gone also.

P.S. I just replaced the rear pads on the '97 and they looked just about like yours. They too never made a sound of warning.

Re: ABS coming on for no reason

Low pads won't cause the abs to kick in. I'll bet it's a cracked/damaged tone wheel.

I think you're right. It's still doing it

Re: ABS coming on for no reason

The worst part is if that's the case, the bearing/hub has to be separated to replace one.

Re: ABS coming on for no reason

Just take out the ABS fuse from under the dash and enjoy the way a car is supposed brake. Subaru ABS is horrible anyway.

It would be easier to replace the whole works, no?

I would, but I have issues with hiding problems

The hub assembly needs to be removed to access the tone wheel for replacement.

I had this happen to me too.

Are you getting a code? Could be ABS sensor if you are.

My LED is flashing 5x, could this just be the sensor? If its the tone ring, I'm just going to grab a whole hub at the junkyard. Seems like an easier DIY. btw it read front Left - Driver side I presume?

Re: ABS coming on for no reason

Any idea? Ring or Sensor, Driver or Passenger side? I glanced at the ring today and didn't notice any cracks.
