What year is your car?

Also, there are two possible EGR codes on the OBD 1 cars, the EGR solenoid and the EGR temp sensor. The 92s didn't have the temp sensor and won't care that it's not there, but the 94s will throw a code if it's missing/unplugged only (regardless of what it reads). They'll all throw a code for the solenoid if it's bad/unplugged.
I have given this some thought and I don't think you're right about the 92's. I saw this because I had a friend, Amy from San Antonio, who had a 92 pearl SVX a few years back and she constantly had issues with the check engine light coming on because of the EGR code. She ended up having the EGR replaced 3 times before she eventually sold it.

Re: EGR valve

On a side note, do we have a "How to" for replacing the EGR? From the diagrams I see of it, if i could find it, I could probably replace it myself rather than taking it to the mechanic.

Anyone have any ideas?

how is that possible when i have a 92 throwing an EGR code?
i wish i could just get rid of it.

I think he did read it. I believe he is alluding that you are wrong in your assertion that the 92's ECU do not read the EGR codes

Re: EGR valve

i did read it, and i wasn't calling anyone wrong, i'm just wondering what the real answer is, because i own a 1992 (manufactured 09/1991) and it's throwing an EGR code. it might not have the same design or sensors as the later ones, but it has to have one if it's throwing a code..

Ah, I gotcha. Which code number does it give? The list of codes has 3 that I found for the EGR:

34 EGR Solenoid or Circuit
55 EGR Temperature Sensor or Circuit
56 EGR System

I believe that the 92s can only throw the 34. They don't have a temp sensor, like the 94s, and I think only the CA-spec OBD1 cars would throw the 56. That is my understanding at least, from what I've gleaned from the forum.

that must be which code mine is throwing. i don't remember for certain, but i believe it was 34. and as far s my understanding goes, there's no cheap or easy way to fix it. booo.

The solenoid is located at #11 in this diagram. Not the easiest thing to get to, but far from the worst.

But I bet that you could get rid of that code by spraying your cleaner of choice through it, it might just be stuck. Replacing it would definitely work. That's the only electrical part of the the whole EGR system on the 92s, so that's the only way the ECU could know there's anything wrong with it to throw the code.

My plan for deleting it is to use a 92 ECU and leave the solenoid connected and cap off or loop the two nipples on it. Then remove everything else and block it off. The rest of it just connects to the two very small nipples on the top of the throttle bodies, the part that connects to the intake on the back passenger side, and the part that connects to the exhaust on the passenger side exhaust manifold. AFAIK, as long as the solenoid is plugged in and not stuck, it should work fine.

Re: EGR valve

Well I'll be watching this for the fix, as I get the CE for egr after a drive and then restarting, unless I pop the hood and let the heat out of the area of the egr solinoid, then no CE, I like the idea of a fix that gets rid of it, my legacys don't have them so I don't need them on the SVX's, Cheers to all....G

well if there's no risks in spraying cleaner down there, i'll try it. what kind do you suggest? i was going to buy one, but every bottle i saw said, "don't spray on electrical parts or things that get hot." it's an engine...

Re: EGR valve

Bumping this because I now have a bottle of seafoam. My buddy said he had an EGR code on an old car, put seafoam in the gas, and never saw the code again. Would I put it through the gas? Vacuum lines? Elsewhere?

Far as seafoam goes, I have this image in my SVX folder, I take no responsibility for this:
I don't know who made this pic, or when, or if it is even right, but I did save it to my HDD at some point in the past.

I would also like to say that I also have a 92 (1991 build date), and that I have an ECUtune 1.5 chip installed, and yet I still throw both codes 34 and 56...
