Are the middle row switches backlight?

I meant backlit.
Now that I'm finally able to drive my SVX, I noticed last night that none of the middle row of switches (eg, the fog light switch) is visible in the dark if it's not turned on (yes, the car was running and the headlights on). Should they be? It's kinda hard to find them in the dark if not.

Thanks,

Re: Are the middle row switches backlight?

Yes they should be lit when you turn on the headlights. The security, cruise, fog light, defroster, and I think the hazard light button too should all have backlights for the button labels. So should the buttons underneath them (parking lights/mirror heaters, heated seats? Since you're in Canada). I imagine the bulbs are kinda difficult to change. The buttons themselves are not that hard to remove though. I can walk you through that, done it a couple times.

Hopefully someone (SVXcess) will be along with the part numbers for those bulbs.

Re: Are the middle row switches backlight?

.
COMPLETE LIST OF SWITCHES THAT ILLUMINATE. Each switch has its own bulb.

SPOT DOOR ROOM SPOT - wording on overhead console illuminated green

CRUISE - wording illuminated green (amber LED when active)
FOG - symbol illuminated green (amber LED when active)
SECURITY - wording illuminated green, ( red LED flashing unless the security system is turned off or the ignition is turned on)

REAR DEFROSTER - symbol illuminated green (amber LED when active)
HAZARD - triangle illuminated red . (Does not flash when activated)

HEATED OUTSIDE MIRROR - symbol illuminated green (amber LED when active)
PARKING - symbol illuminated green (amber LED when active) There are no no amber LEDs on the 92.
MIRROR CONTROL ARROWS- directional arrows on round button illuminated green

AUTO POWER WINDOW
- LED illuminated green on this switch

The wording on the mirror control is NOT illuminated.
The word AUTO on the power window switch is NOT illuminated
The sunroof buttons are NOT illuminated (arrows are painted on)

The bulb number for the illumination of the switches you mentioned is 83426PA020 In your case you need 3.

The chart that shows the part numbers for the bulbs can be found in the How-To documents HERE

Apply pressure to the rounded end cap on the left side of the assembly. Press inward and rotate out, I use a butter knife with a terry cloth towel (or similar) over it, to give me some leverage and prevent scratching, and pry it out.

When you pull out the switch clusters from the dash, the illumination bulbs are inside the BROWN sockets They are the ones closest to the face of the switch panel.

The BLUE sockets towards the rear house the indicator lights. I have never had to replace those. Using a small screwdriver, hey just twist out with a quarter-turn. Check for proper illumination before putting switches back into the dash.

These work very well, and are usually in stock. They're in plastic bags in the pull out drawer section near the back of the store. You need to reuse the plastic bases, and bulb condoms from the original lights.

Re: Are the middle row switches backlight?

Thanks much everyone for the quick and detailed replies and info!

Just for fun, I called Subaru with the part number for the bulbs. It's 3 days to get them and they're 'only' $4.73 each, so thanks lots for the info about Radio Shack.

Mine don't illuminate either and my sunroof is stock.

It's weird that every one of my switch lights are burned out.

What's different about your sunroof? Glass?

Re: Are the middle row switches backlight?

I got the 2 switch bars out under the instrument cluster without breaking anything.

And then the lower left one with the mirror defrost/parking light came out okay but does anyone know where the illumination bulbs are for that one?

The switches I haven't been able to get out, though, are for the sunroof buttons and the 4 lights in that cluster. Any advice for those?

Thanks again.

Re: Are the middle row switches backlight?

Sunroof buttons - remove the two covers/lenses for the map lights, and then there are a couple screws up there. Undo them and you should be able to take it from there.

Re: Are the middle row switches backlight?

The wording on the 4 buttons on the sunroof control are illuminated. The sunroof buttons arrows do not light

For the room light switch, carefully remove the two lenses over the spotlights with a small flat-blade screwdriver. They are slotted for this purpose.

Once the lenses are out, you can see the 2 Phillips head mounting screws. Remove the two screws (one each side) that you now have access to.

Pull down the assembly and disconnect the wiring harness. On top there are two sockets with a screwdriver slot, similar to the lights on the dash. These are the bulb holders. Each bulb illuminates 2 buttons.

Unscrew the bulbs with a quarter turn. The replacement bulbs are 83426PA000.

Reassemble and reinstall.

Since they last a long time, I prefer the ease of using OEM bulbs, as opposed to using Radio Shack Micro Lamps

Only the 4 directional arrows are illuminated. The lettering is not.

This is quite hard to disassemble to try to replace non-replaceable bulbs. OEM switches are still available.

Thank you Sir! I guess that I'll save this one for another time.

Would you know, though, if the Mirror Defrost / Parking Light switch has bulbs that are replaceable? I got that switch out but couldn't see any bulbs.

Cheers!
