92 temp guage almost to the red

Just noticed on the way to work that my temp guage goes almost to the red. Wil go down the faster I go but at around 30 mph it just keeps going up. Thermostat was changed about a year ago. Any ideas what might be making this happen?

Re: 92 temp guage almost to the red

Check in order of simplicty:

1. Radiator cap (most likely the coolant would be boiling over)
2. Thermostat
3. Water pump
4. Everyone else's first suggestion

IB headgasket failure.

Huskymaniac's suggestions in this case are the most sensible way to go about diagnosing and curing your overheating problem in this case.

Subaru thermostat or aftermarket? I had an aftermarket over that only lasted me a year.

Re: 92 temp guage almost to the red

coolant cap looks new
thermostat and water pump have around 2000 miles on them

also are there any other ways to tell if it is the head gasket?

on the way home it was similar to this mourning crept up at partial throttle not as high as the red mark. really hoping its not a head gasket this is my daily and im sure thats not a one day job

Are the rad fans coming on? If it's overheating at slow speeds but cooling alright at high speeds that indicates a radiator airflow issue to me.

My sentiments exactly. There's one in the underhood fuse box marked AC that could be the culprit.

Turn the ign on, turn the AC on, the fans should start.

Harvey.

Re: 92 temp guage almost to the red

did the tests and the fans were not running i switched all of the relays and fuses and tried again and still nothing. so i decided to take them all out and put them back in again and make sure all of the connections were tight drove the car home temp gauge went to normal and stayed there wasn't sure if it was due to the weather that it didn't overheat since it is 26 right now so i popped the hood when i was home and saw the fans running so hopefully everything will be fine now thank you for all the help

Re: 92 temp guage almost to the red

If the fans are running you should be good to go. A car will overheat at pretty much any temperature if the cooling system is faulty.

Re: 92 temp guage almost to the red

thats what i was hoping for but now i went out side and tried the fan test with turning the ac on on and they did not turn on so maybe the fans were running the whole time ill have to go for a drive later to pick up my new grille and hopefully it will all be good
