svx help

help my car started clicking only when the is in gear.
so i looked and i though it was a ripped boot. so i just was gonna wait until i got paid to replace the axel.
when i was driving it i stopped at a red light and when i started off it made a clunk sound.
it sounded like some thing broke and it sould like it is banging off the bottem of the car
it also makes my car feel like it is loose and wiggles in the front.
i need help bad

Re: svx help

Could you please clarify some things for us? When you said it was 'clicking while the transmission is turning', do you mean while the car is going around a turn, or do you mean when the car is in gear?

It sounds like your issue is either a bad axle or a bad front differential. We'll need more information to help you diagnose this.

I'm sorry for all of the questions, but your post is not very concise. I'm guessing that you speak English as a second language.

Mike

You need to drop out the transmission, separate the differential from the transmission and take apart the back of the transmission. Then replace the ring and pinion for the differential. A lot of work.

Or you can just swap in a transmission and rear differential from another subaru with a higher gear ratio that will give it better acceleration and seem to be much more reliable than the stock SVX transmission.

As for things you need, You need access to a lift, other than that its just 10,12, and 14mm sockets and wrenches to do just about all the work. Search for transmission replacement and you should get threads on how to R&R the trans.

I'm thinking that if you're asking this question, it's probably beyond your abilities.

Significant Technical Input
Re: svx help

It's worth noting that the clutch packs in the higher gear ratio transmissions off the other model subaru's aren't actually as strong as SVX clutch packs. It's just a billion times easier to find one that isn't on it's last legs. I've rebuilt a couple 4.44's I sourced through svxfiles and while the clutch packs they came with didn't have the capacity that the svx clutch packs do they were in very good shape because they hadn't been pushing around a heavy, torquey SVX for 10-15 years.

No, but you'll want to be sure to swap the ring and pinion in the rear differential so that you maintain the same gear ratio as your new transmission. I'd recommend trying to obtain the rear differential from the same car as the transmission so that you know they match.

If you need any help, i'm fairly local to you. Best of luck!

Yes, Just make sure to swap the transmission as well as the rear differential.

Oh and Mike(lan) did not know that about the other trans. I just said they seem more reliable because others have swapped them in and haven't seemed to have problems with them blowing up like the stock. I know the trans in my car was rebuilt around 65-75k and blew at 103k and I'm pretty sure people have gotten more than 30k out of a used auto from another suby.
Just stating what I have noticed. I know you have the knowledge from actually seeing the internal parts
