Re: tranny line ballbearings?

you left out everything that is important to doing it so that it won't break again.

What transmission is the pump you are using from?
Did you remove the pinion from the pump?
What pinion shim are you using?
Have you touched the side plates?

Re: tranny line ballbearings?

ok so my pinion went bad on my front diff as you can see.... so i am putting a new 4.11 front diff in it as well as a new 4.11 rear diff....i have the tranny and diff. out of the car tore it apart put the new MATCHING pinion in for 4.11 put a new tail gasket on and put it back together, my next step is to clean the front diff. and put it on with subaru's silicone gasket, than put the tranny and front diff. back into the car.

Re: tranny line ballbearings?

ok the way you are doing it isn't going to work.

I'm trying to help but I need you to answer the questions i asked..each one specifically.

also to verify...

when you say installing the 411 dif i am taking that to mean the entire housing as one piece..not the carrier from inside of it.

Do you have the pump from the transmission the new differential came out of?

Re: tranny line ballbearings?

ok,

side plates are the plates on the side of the differential housing that the axles stubs stick out of. The position of the ring gear in the housing is adjusted by turning the side plates. Have they been taken out or turned?

Re: tranny line ballbearings?

sorry ..just the combination of it sounding like you had just gotten a carrier and pinion with the pictures of the last pinion that obviously was grossly missinstalled had me thinking you were unabashedly throwing it together wrong. my bad

Re: tranny line ballbearings?

ya someone messed with it.. a lot... you can tell by the wear on the edges of the pinon that gets deeper towards the front. The lash was too large by a long shot.
