Alternators?!

I am now on my third alternator, second in four months. I understand they do not make new alternators for our SVXs. I asked a master Subaru tech if there were any alternators from other cars that fit the SVX and he said he had no idea. Is there a reliable way to fix a problem like this, where the refurbished alternators fail? Are there any crossover alternators?

Could bad wires of some sort cause a new alternator to fail? How would I check?

Re: Alternators?!

My AC Delco reman is also lifetime warranteed. Spend a few extra dollars now, and don't worry about having to spend them later.

Re: Alternators?!

I'd be extremely surprised if any "new" aftermarket alternator for the SVX isn't actually a reman.

Re: Alternators?!

I need to drive this car 2300 miles from PA to AZ. I hope this alternator does not poop out on me.

Is there an easy way to check the wires for damage or weak points? The grounds seem fine could they go bad?

You can pretty much visually check your main cables and such but we have no way to know when the internal components of the alternator will fail... until it happens.
With the exception of erratic behavior, which we are pretty much given a rude awakening, it works or it gives us the Christmas tree thingy! Basically they work or they don't

If a in doubt, I would bite the bullet and just replace it for that long trip. Lots of things can happen nowadays when we get stranded in God only knows where, and none of them are good.

Take care,
Keith

Re: Alternators?!

Bring your car to a PEP BOYS or AUTO ZONE for a battery and alternator test.
