SVX windshields...

While browsing one of russian auto-forums, I stumbled over a link to a russian glass manufacturer's website, Steklolux. I checked if they offer anything for SVX, and it turned out that they do: the windshield is 5580 roubles (approximately $240).

So, the question is what would be additional expenses. I have never shipped anything that large from overseas, so I don't have even a ballpark figure for such shipment. I assume, there would be some US taxes on top of that price. And I am not sure if US Department of Transportation requires some certifications for the windshields (the manufacturer's site says they meet the russian certification requirements, GOST-5727, but I am not sure if it is recognized by DoT).

A bit of translation for non-russian-speakers: at this link, 1st column is "Make", 2nd - "Model", 3rd - "Glass Type" ("заднее стекло с подогревом" means "heated rear window"; "лобовое стекло" means "windshield"), 4th column is model year, 5th is color ("Бесцветное" means "clear", "Фоновое" means "tinted", "с с/з полосой" means "with a sun-blocking stripe"). The price is displayed below, current exchange rate is about 23 roubles for a dollar. So, 5580rub is approximately $240).

They also say that they can manufacture side windows, but would need an example to do that.

Comments welcome.

Well, I am originally from Moscow too The question was, would all the additional costs I mentioned (shipping, taxes, etc.) bring the final price higher than what windshields cost locally - approximately $1k...

Being that he is in Russia, he may be able to get a shipping quote for you. Have you tried contacting the manufacturer and asking if they ship over seas directly, and if so, how much would they charge?

Re: SVX windshields...

Also another big question is, does it include the gasket around, or is it only glass. From what I hear, it's not in your best interest to attempt to reuse the existing gasket.

Re: SVX windshields...

Do a search. There is also and aftermarket company in the US now that sells them for around the $300 price range. They are just not titanium coated so cars with them installed will eventualy have cracked dashes from UV rays.

So, the titanium coating is for protection from the sun? All these years I figured it was to strengthen the glass
