I feel a little ripped off...

Okay, so I bought this SVX parts list thingy on eBay. It was my first eBay purchase ever, and I even set up accounts with eBay and PayPal just for it. Today, two weeks later, I finally received it. I would have had it last week but there was a misunderstanding concerning the address and the seller had to send it twice.

The description of the item called it a 'folder,' so I was expecting a bonafide, heavy-stock Subaru document. What I have here in my hands is a photocopy of the SVX pages from the big Subaru parts book.

I can see in the supplied photo on the auction page what it is, now. But from the description, the separate pages in the photo still fit into my head.

Hey, it's only $15, but if the guy had said 'I photocopied this out of a Subaru manual,' I wouldn't have hit 'buy now' right away. I would have spent five minutes at Ann Arbor Subaru trying to convince the parts guy there to do the same thing, but not for $15.

But if I had not been convinced (deceived, I think), then the seller would not have gotten his money.

Yeah, his sale was fair. But it was cheap in a sucker-punch sort of way. To his credit, the guy did put the pages in a nice 15-cent Kinko's page protector.

End result? Don't bother bidding on this guy's 'parts lists' any more. I'll scan every page of this 'folder' so everyone here can use it.

Significant Technical Input
I'd be willing to bet that Subaru or FHI has a copyright on that document(s) and would probably be interested in finding out that someone is making money from distributing it. Not quite the same as the free sharing of info we do here.

Time to clean house!

The guy had a scanned page right there for you to see. All you had to do was send him an email asking 'where did you get this page from?' or 'is this from the subaru parts book?" I really have a hard time listening to people who complain about being 'tricked' on ebay due to their own ignorance.

And beav, reporting someone for selling a parts list from a 'copyrighted' manual?? Why don't you take up a real cause that matters instead of crying to mama about trivial things. And incidently, if MR POCKETS were to scan and then distribute this list, that would indeed be in violation of copyright laws as well, whether he's selling the list or not.

I_Alcyone_I ,

I was contributing to the discussion regarding ebay and copyright violations. What are you contributing to?

What I contribute to, is a diplomatic settlement of harsh comments. Though your point may be valid, your way of voicing it is somewhat abrasive and could be considered confrontational. Try to be a little more diplomatic in your approach, please.

Thank you for your future cooperation.

What color were the sheets? Were they white, or were they green. The ones that I bought turned out to be green, and very hard to read. The ones I saw on ebay were white, and the information looked much easier to read. I think that he did this so they could not be scanned as easily or photo copied. Just wondered.

'Time to clean house?'

Okay, troll, let us address your rather abrasive post one point at a time, shall we?

1. Yes, he had a photograph of 'example pages.' There was no way to tell, from the photograph, that they were just photocopied. Nowhere in his description of the item did he say 'I photocopied this out of the real thing.'

2. No, I did not ask the seller where he got the pages from. I am a trusting person. He could have just as easily fully represented what he was selling. I also bought the parts list based on another long-term member's recommendation, which carries a lot of weight with me.

3. You can keep your hard time to yourself. I stated very clearly that his sale was fair, just cheap. I say again, I said his sale was fair. Maybe you need to go back and read my post again before being so abusive.

4. After receiving the package yesterday, I considered the seller's violation of Subaru's copyrights and decided to ignore it. Yes, if I were to scan and distribute the materials myself I would be violating the same copyright. But this is a car that they no longer sell and Subaru would be far more interested in somebody making money off the same act.

Don't call me ignorant. I'm not going after the seller. I'm not giving him negative feedback. I'm not calling Subaru about his sales. But he is not fully representing what he is selling. How am I supposed to know how Subaru, or any other manufacturer, binds their parts manuals? Those pages in the photo could have been glossy, heavy-stock paper for all I knew.

Don't call me ignorant.

"And beav, reporting someone for selling a parts list from a 'copyrighted' manual?? Why don't you take up a real cause that matters instead of crying to mama about trivial things."

You will make few friends here with such an attitude and inflammatory statements like that. If you want to troll a forum, go to some other site.

I'm still curious about your 'green sheets.' The pages I have are plain white photocopier paper. The printing is standard photocopier toner. It's all very easy to read.

My parts lists are on very dark green paper. It is on better paper, and because it is colored, it is a little heavier. It looks like they have been photo copied; clear, but black print on dark green has less contrast and much harder to read. I will try to get an image of it, and post for your reference. Yes, I was a little dissapointed in the parts list, but I just squint as I look at the parts list.

That's really weird.

And that's all I have to say about it.

This may be an explanation: We ordered a ream of paper from a popular office supply store. They delivered, instead of the white paper we ordered, a ream of "assorted flavor" pastels. Instead of sending someone to pick it up. they let us have it for free and delivered the correct order later. Now, rather than waste the available stock of white paper for menial copying, we have several bits of info come to us on various pastel sheets. Perhaps this was an available "free" stock, thereby increasing profitability. Just a thought.

That's one theory, but allow me to pose an even more believable one:

Who ever copied Earl's parts list ran out of paper. He asked his mom to pick up some on her way back from the grocery store. She picked out the right kind of paper, but on the way out of the store she bumped into a neighbor friend, who was on her way out of town with her family when they realized that they needed green paper for Jimmy's school project (due when they arrived home the following week). While they were talking, Amanda (their daughter, currently engaged in fierce sibling rivalry with Jimmy) reached into the carts and swapped the two reams of paper. The two mothers went in their separate directions and didn't notice the switch until much later.

I think this makes much more sense than Randy's bogus 'they used whatever they had lying around' horse puckey.

Horse puckey? You mean to lead me to believe that you purposely passed up an opportunity to use the word *POOP!*

I'm suprised and disappointed.

That is exactly what happened.

I know.

I was there.
