Classic SVX
I have a 92 svx that has been converted to R134a.
The Low is the one with the blue cap, the High does not have a cap.

If you need any other pictures let me know.

Alia, mine was like yours with the HP port on the drier. When I got the 134 kit, the HP adapter wouldn't fit on and without hitting the hood so I left it off. That's most likely what happened to yours.

I was at least hoping to make the HP adapter fit so that I can do the conversion properly then take it off for hood closing.

At least I know that my particular case isn't unique but still don't understand the rhyme or reason for what seems to be a random thing

Thanks for your input. Much appreciated.

Looks like at least some '92s were like this (if not all). From the 1992 SVX "Service Manual CD" page...

The first diagram on page 1 of this doc Automatic Climate Control (PDF) has what seems to be a service port on the receiver—drier, but the drawing is small and not labeled.

Incidentally, the diagram on page 22 of that doc shows the expansion valve inside the dash. I'll bet that's fun to service. "Step 2 — Remove glove box."

The A/C Compressor Servicing document (PDF) lists 28 different compressor/clutch configurations, so perhaps some '92s had different low-side port locations.

The entire A/C system diagrams appear to be missing from '92 and '93 MYs at SubaruParts.com.

I strongly recommend getting a cap.

Both caps were missing from the service ports on that Cadillac I worked on, and dirt had gotten inside. The high side port started leaking after I attached and removed the test gauge. The port didn't have a simple Schrader valve core inside (like inside a car or bicycle tire stem) so I had to replace the entire service port.

Advance Auto parts stocked the plastic caps for $2 each (either red — high or blue — low).

I have bought a kit at Wal Mart that has many different nipples and fittings in the section with the AC supplies.

Yes, and if you were to use the service port on top of the drier, you'll soon find out that the high pressure nipple (in Walmart package) will not fit this location. However, if you have a high pressure port where it belongs (next to the A/C comp) then all should be fine. Unfortunately, I don't have this scenario so I'm at a loss!

edit: you *may* have a fitting that fit the reciever nipple....!

Have you tried a 12R adapter on that high port? Bet they put the wrong one on it. Anyways, all you should need is the low side, fill to 28-30 psi. Mostly you only need the high port to trouble shoot AC problems.

Hmm, I wonder if either of these NAPA fittings will fit? I didn't buy them because I'm 2,000 miles from SVX which is sitting nicely in a parking garage

Can someone run out to their '92 and measure the fitting sitting on top of the receiver/dryer and tell me what the OD is? I only have two choices: 3/16 or 1/4 (maybe).

Sorry about the poor quality camera pic!

Thanks.

The AC system on my 93 is like yours.

At least I now know which is the high and low side..
Question: I hear a "water running" sound from my passenger side when the AC is on.. I found the sound is coming from a plastic tank under the dash.. While my AC blows nice and cold, does anyone know how to get rid of that water running sound, what I might have to do? I am not sure how to service my AC and living in South Texas.. I need to keep it in top condition.

Got her done!

Advance Auto had a retrofit kit (interdynamics) that had the proper fitting for the high pressure fitting in my vehicle. I ended up returning the ones from NAPA (as pic above), AutoZone & Pep Boys. She held 24 in Hg (7,000' elev) vacuum overnight, so I loaded her up with R134a today.

Here's the Manifold gauge set hooked up while vaccuming:

Here's the Manifold gauge set hooked up while charging. Notice the position of the R134a can near the rear, next to the throttle cable. This is a nice warm area that kept the can warm while emptying.

Factory shop manual stated to put R134 through the high press port while engine off. Then shut the hi side off, start the car to 1700 rpm, open the low side and continue draining the R134 can. This worked great!

She took about 22 oz of R134a. Low side press is at 28psi and high side at 205 psi (probably lost a little pressure during disconnection of the gauge). Spec is 28psi (low) and 185-213psi (hi) for R134a.

The ambient temp in the garage is about 80* and the vent temp is at 47* (1700 rpm).

Hoping to take a drive into town where it should be around 97* to test out the A/C system.

Thanks to all for your help and inputs.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Regards.

ps the correct PAG oil for this particular compressor is PAG 46 (viscosity), 2.4 oz.

Update

A quick update on the performance of R134a...boy, do I miss my R12 The vent temps is only down to 60*, so I can't say that's very stellar. I may have a leak somewhere so I'll hunt it down today

another update:
went into town today, temp was 93* and my vent temp was a paltry 82*. Will investigate later!
