steering wheels squeeks

I know its not that big of a deal but this is extremely irritating. When its hot outside and the interior of my car is hot the steering wheel squeeks extremely loud when I turn it. I installed a momo wheel but nothing appears to be rubbing. This only happens when the inside of the car is hot though so is something simply expanding and rubbing or is this a larger issue??

Hi Jas,

Does it sound like a metallic noise, sort of like the noise from nails on a chalk board?

Mine does the same thing but only with over half lock at slow speeds, belts are all ok & its deffo not a belt squeal or pump noise not from the rack
It does not do it when stationary and turning the wheels lock to lock.

I have been told it could be where the steering column goes through the bulkhead, there is a bush/seal (or there is on Impreza's that have a similar noise), and to try a silicon spray on all the joints and contact parts.
Like you say its no big deal and hardly noticable, next time I take mine out and my friend has a ramp free I will get it in the air & have a look and spray around.

Let me know how you get on.

Darren

PS have you fitted the MOMO wheel from another Subaru? I have 1 here from an STI7 Impreza but my car has an airbag and not sure if the later 1 will work.

When I put a Momo wheel in my 87 Volvo, it squeeked becuase of the metal button that rubs on a plate when the steering wheel is turned in any direction. Its been awhile but as I recall, this metal button is for the horn mechanism. Take the wheel off and see if there is any gold colored dust left behind from the button dragging. I would grease that whole area up really well after cleaning it.

its more likely that it is the horn button rubbing because it seems like the sound is coming from inside the wheel. I originally thought plastic was rubbing but i guess i have to take the wheel off again to look.

^^ and yes its a momo wheel from a JDM sti. I wired the airbag but the light comes on because the voltage is different.
