Is it worth it?

I just looked at a 92 pearl SVX LSI. I am debating whether to buy it or not. Tell me what you think...

170K
Custom exhaust (sounds great)
koni adjustable shocks? (I think that was right)
Tranny was replaced at 123,000
It has window tint
new timing belt at 160K
Needs rear rotors resurfaced or replaced
needs rear brake pads
tires are ok (will pass MD inspection, but will need to be replaced)
rust and slight dent on driver side fender
It has a LSL drivers seat but the others are LSI
the battery leaked so I'm sure there is rust underneath of that
left tie rod needs to be replaced (I think the other may need to be replaced as well)
It was hard to steer when I was driving it.
The engine sounds a little rough.

Do you think this car is worth $1500? Inorder for it to pass inspection it will need a couple hundred dollars worth of work. And with the 170K and rough engine sound I'm worried that it will fail sometime down the road. What do you think?

Thanks!

...at least I got my SVX fix when I drove it.

Sounds like a good deal to me, but be prepared to be fixing stuff a lot. I don't know if that would be a realiable daily driver. How did you like the suspension? I have the Koni/GC setup. It is stiff but really transforms the handling of the car. It should have been very noticable.

yeah I know all about fixing stuff...a lot. I'm currently trying to find a front diff for my car. I didn't notice much of a difference in the suspension.

Also, it seems really low in the rear. And when I made turns it seemed like there might have been some rubbing.

I think you should keep looking. Better to spend twice that and get a car in decent shape. You'd be looking at some major expenses on the issues about which you are aware, nevermind the inevitable surprises. Good luck in your search.

Strange, how did he come up with LSI model in 92. There are only 2 models in 92 LS and LS-L. But yeh thats true, it need lots of work and attention to get it back to good running condition (or can I say to use it as a daily driver). I dont think $1500 is bad if the car is exactly how you described, but since you are sayin the engine is rough, who knows whts goin on inside. See if he can go low and somehow even if it dies after a while, you can use the exhaust and suspensions which are worth $1000 and also the other stuff.

I personally wouldn't buy it unless you dont mind working on it. Recently I came accross a 92 SVX over here with 54k miles and the guy is expecting around 9k - 12k for it .

I'm still confused on the whole LSI LSL thing. It had no sunroof and 3 of the seats had the suede on it.

I told him that if he dropped the price I would consider buying it. But, I don't count on him doing that. Oh well.

Ok then it is definitely LS and he has one seat replaced with LSL one. Check on here for all the models descriptions for all years, you will get an idea.

Why not just go 4.11/4.44 instead of all the work involved in swapping a diff(nevermind the chance of finding a front diff)? I would pass on the pearl unless you can get the price to 1,000. I'll have a pearly up for sale in a few weeks. What are you looking to spend for one?

I wouldn't think twice about buying that car. Even if you are best friends with a mechanic, parts and labor would still be a heavy amount. You can find better ones for that price or a bit more.

Keep looking.

To tell you the truth, I'm not really looking for another SVX right now. A friend of mine told me that this one was for sale cheap. So I took a look at it this morning. I've seen some SVXs sell for much more than I thought they were worth. A couple months ago I tried to buy a SVX from a guy who wanted $3500 for it and it had a blown tranny. So I was just wondering if everyone agreed with me on the price. And the majority does. So I thank everyone for their input .

As for my diff. I'm having the hardest time finding a diff or a transmission for a decent price. I was going to buy a tranny from this guy but he never got back to me. I was considering the 4.44 gears but I need to get my car on the road asap. And I don't have the money to send it to a shop.
