need help quick!

okay, so i trekked through a "low maintenance dirt road" after a nice rain storm... and when i was driving home i heard a rubbing sound

the rubbing sounded like when my brake sheild on my acura was rubbing, but much less harsh... the sound is definately speed related.. not rpm... and a little metallic sounding, it has nothing to do with my front brakes i checked..... i also checked for the sound when it was on jackstands in FWD mode... nothing

what could this be? heat shield hitting drive shaft? or something expensive... im VERY broke...

also... why does only my drivers side wheel spin in FWD mode?? (until i give it some throttle) sounds like bad news to me..?
both fronts spun in AWD mode...(dont ask how i know... almost a disaster, thank goodness for a decent e-brake)

thanks!!

okay! further investigating reveals.....
definately not front brakes...(from all i can tell)
definately not back brakes...(from all i can tell)
driving in FWD on the road the sound is still there
rolling front wheels in FWD on jackstands... no sound

k... everybody know that tin shield above the exhaust and directly below the driveshaft? is that needed? can i take it off? if its bent, its only slightly bent, would that result in a sound like this? its very likely i got a ton of dirt and mud up above that sheild, and pretty much everywhere else...

any suggestions?!
i'm stuck and its really annoying sounding...
would this sound like a driveability or safety issue? am i missing something?
or just an annoyance?

thanks...

depends where the noise is comin from, i removed everything from the gearbox forward as far as heat shielding, no probs with doin that, if the sound comes around the center of the car it may be this, although im not sure why it would be afeced in f wd mode, (what is that anyway??, on the aussie delivered ones its AWD ALWAYS), might be worth a look, one of my heat shields was rubbing on my center baring:

I seem to be posting this pic alot latley

Dunno. Could be suspension related if the noise goes away on stands.

My memory is bad right now but I thought one way to check the front wheels was to spin them manually and see if they turn opposite directions?

hey!! alright... after a whole day of trying to figure it out, i just ended up prying that heat sheild away from the driveshaft as much i could... and banged the crap out of it... bunch of dirt and rocks came out, and TADAAA... fixed! but i found out my pass. side brake pads are non existent and my drivers side... (both rear) are pretty good... hmmmm...

oh, and FWD mode... i meant just putting the FWD fuse in the fuse box (for diagnostic purposes)...

that'll teach me to trek through 6-8 inches of mud and gravel and rocks....

thanks
