Stereo Installation
Hi All,
I have a 95 SVX with the original stereo in it. I'd like to get a new stereo for the car, so I went to Best Buy to purchase one of the new iPod compatible ones and have it installed. The guy at Best Buy said that to install a new stereo in an SVX would cost hundreds of dollars due to the fact that the stereo is not amplified (or something to that affect... I know very little about car stereos). He also said it would need new speakers, wiring, etc to be compatible with today's stereos. I have never heard this and was wondering if anyoe has replaced the stereo and if this is true..... Thanks, Sumon |

hello, i have installed radios in a few svx's and what the people at best buy [U]have in their computers[U] is that there is an internal amplifier in the car, this is something that has to be bypassed due to the fact that it runs at a different resistance than the aftermarket radios, what they would charge hundreds for is running new speaker wires to each speaker, a job basically anyone can do, i would not worry about getting new speakers if money is an issue because the worst that will happen at that point is you will blow the speakers, if you want to get serious into you audio system get an amplifier that compliments aftermarket speakers and you will have extremely crisp sound, if you need a more detailed explination i can give it to you, just pm me

tell them they are dumbasses, and try to do it yourself. youll learn more about your car, and you wont risk them really screwing up your stereo cover and what not.

There is nothing different/special about the SVX's stereo. Get your headunit and head over to the how-to on stereo installation. The SVX isnt any harder than a basic install in say, a cavalier, or the like.

I have done some of the installs myself and not replaced the speakers unless they are bad and they are quite easy. I would get the stereo and install it yourself. If you have quesitons on how, go to the How-To Docs and read how to do it. If you have more, post the question here and we will try to help you. Good luck.

WHY do people listen to those Best Buy infants. Most of those snot nosed little brats were not even a twinkle in there parents eye when the SVX came out. They have no idea what they are talking about.
I'm better now. Installing a aftermarket is not that hard. I did and added a 1/2 din EQ along with some switches. All contained in the original cage. Stereo linkie The correct harness will make al the difference. Steve

There is no amplifier between the head and the speakers, they are direct wired. However, the fact that there is not a commercially available harness might put off the less seasoned installers due to the number of wires that would have to be spliced. There is a member here who sells a custom harness which would make the job easier. The stock speakers will handle moderate amounts of power, but the paper cones will eventually rip if you push them at high volumes too often.

What a crock!! Whatever you do don't let the guys at Best Buy butcher up your radio harness!! If they do then it is a pain to put back the factory radio if you ever decide to. Buy a harness from svxdc(great product) and install it yourself. It is very easy if you have ever replaced a stereo before. Just plug the harness into the factory plug and connect it to the new stereo. The SVX is just like any other radio, no external amp or speaker amps(Bose). You can buy a kit that will give you a pocket below the radio it you go with a single din sized radio. You can even install a Subaru 6 disc changer/radio(WRX) if you want. That's what I did.
