Its Done! Pics of my IRIS control valve mod

I got my SVX back on the road yesterday after replacing all the hardened air, vacuum and water lines under the intake. I mentioned in a previous thread that my IRIS control valve diaphragm was shot. After doing a parts search I found that the valve cost about $360.00 list and there were none available in any of the Subaru parts warehouses in the US. One dealer in the entire US had one available at list price + big shipping. Decided that to get the car back on the road I'd have to take matters into my own hands. Looking around the shop the only vacuum diaphragm that I could find that had similar diaphragm area and stroke was a vacuum secondary control from an old Holley 4160 4bb carb.
So here they are, pictures of my succesful (if a bit crude) mod:

I also fixed a broken hose nipple on the VC tank by threading it with 1/8" NPT and inserting a hose barb into it:

BTW: after replacing all the cracked and leaking vacuum hoses, my CEL code 34 for the EGR system disapeared.

I feel that the top end power is a lot better with the IRIS system functioning properly. I also installed the ECUtune Stage 1 at the same time so that could be part of the change too.

Mychailo, thanks again for your help with the How To, parts list, and photos.

Steve

Nice job with the repairs. Looks like you have some fabrication experience.

Thanks. I'm not exactly a master fabricator, but do have a pretty well equipped shop. The only tools needed that the average weekend mechanic would probably not have were a die-grinder type cutoff wheel, wire feed welder and a tap and die set.
