Define "checked"... I've taken it out, visually inspected it, attached a spark plug to it which produced spark... I was going to swap #3 with #4 and see what happens...

For what it's worth, this issue is common in the Legacy engines. My symptom was like this:

-driving on the road, engine starts to hesitate
-all power is gone and must quickly pull over to the shoulder or be killed!
-shut the car down. Faint smell of burning something in the cab.
-start the car and all is well.

diagnostic stuff I did:
swapped coils, swapped plugs, changed spark plugs and wires, checked igniter. No change.

someone on the legacy board said that an EFI relay of some type, located on the driver kick panel, is the culprit. It gets hot and the faint smell of burning comes up. I don't know if this was the final solution or not as the car was sold before this was fixed.

Hope this helps.
