which 4eat trans will swap into 1992 svx?

I've got a bad trans in my 1992 SVX and figure it would be cheaper to swap in a used trans than to rebuild the one in the car. I've read many of the posts on swapping transmissions from other subaru models into these cars. What model's have the best transmission for this swap? What is the stock gear ratio in the SVX? Do the electronics from other tansmsissions work with the 92 TCU?

Thanks in advance,
Steve

You can use any tranny from 91-97 Impreza or 90-98 Legacy 4EAT tranny. The 2.5GT Legacy has 4.11 as well as most if not all Impreza's. Get the vin off the car and have you local Subie dealer run a vin check to find out.
You must have a matching rear too.
Check my locker for more infomation.

A 1996-1997 Legacy Outback, Forester, has a 4.44 final drive ratio, and lower first and second gear ratios for even more pulling power.

I am looking to buy a 1992 that is in a similar state as joeaxial's. This perticular one came in from an auction to a local Subaru Dealer. They were surprised to find that the trans was almost dead when it came off the truck.

Can someone explain to me (who knows little about transmissions) what all is needed to do the 4.44 swap? The dealer is willing to cut a deal on the trans work if I buy the car and have the work done there. Is the 4.44 swap something a dealer would do? What extra cost would / might they incur from doing this swap? I'd be willing to pay the difference in cost if it meant better performance from a better transmission.

Like I said, I don't understand too much about transmissions. I have read other threads about the 4.11 / 4.44 swaps but still wasn't clear on what all was needed to do it. Any information anyone can add would def help clear things up for me.

Thanks!

Dan you need a tranny and a rear with the same ration. Then give them Hucks how too on the rear diff and if they can't figure it out then you really don't want them doing the work.
