Well I'm just a-stounded!

<Like I've always said, GM makes good looking cars with little to nothing of value under the skin.>

Beav, how could you say such a thing? After such "classics" ( ) as the Vega, Monza, Chevette, and Celebrity?

Think of the potential of cars like the Corvair or the Fiero if they had done the job right the first time...Don

Question

Are you ruling out all of the late '60s early '70s GM muscle cars?
My stock '70 Cutlass sedan had an indestructable drive train, all the way to 235K when the suspension finally gave out. And let's not forget the '63 Riviera - One of the best looking cars ever built, IMHO of course.
Ron.

And, let us not forget the Cadillac Cimaron (Sp? Cavalier in Caddy clothing). And, what was the little "zig, zag" with the bird, Caddy (actually an Opel)? What in the hell were they thinking?!?!?!

I'm still waiting for the Pontiac Banshee or Corvette Indy prototypes to be production models.

Daddy's Caddy...

<And, what was the little "zig, zag" with the bird, Caddy (actually an Opel)? What in the hell were they thinking?!?!?!>

That was the problem...they WEREN'T thinking. Although the Catera was miles ahead of the...the...Cim-moron (sp). The Opal can be modified. Heck, GM overseas has the right idea! Vauxhall, Opal, Holden...we need more of that over here. As for "zig zag"...that was Mercedes idea. They gave GM the bird... Don

P.S. Yes Ron, some of the earlier models were great...especially the muscle cars. My Dad had a '61 Caddy that he put 250k on without any major repairs. 390ci that hauled till the day he sold it.

I'd venture to say every auto company has a botched idea or two along the way. I think the premise behind the Cimmeron was to try (badly) to offer an economy Caddy by throwing leather & badges all over a Cavalier. The Catera is actually not a bad car, but what the He!! did Caddy dealerships know about Opels? Check out the new Caddy CTS. Maybe this one will stick. Oh... Yes, you can buy it with a stick!
Ron.

The new CTS is the next generation Catera and is based on the next generation Opel. Cadillac is switching from names to initials like acura did. I agree it does seem better than what it replaces.

The ad for a "guy in his 30's" reminiscing of a 60's impala: Do the math at 30 y/o it would be 1971 (commercial first aired in '01). If he is 35ish (still in his 30's) that brings you right in to the mid 60's when the impala was at it's peak. I agree that the 97-02 Impala's have more in common to a 75 Impala. That sucks!

Don't knock the 93+ Z28, Formula, or Trans Am. Where else could you get a V8 with 275hp (310 with the later LS1) a 6 speed STICK , ABS, Dual airbags, and all the other performance goodies for around $20,000. Luxury options did add money but still what a bargain. I love the SVX I had but my stock '94 Z28 would beat the SVX in every catagory except when it snowed. Also, there is a ton of aftermarket performance parts for the LT1/LS1 engines.

I had an SVX and I sold a ton of them new (relative to the amount built). I even want one now if I could get rid of one of my other cars. What I'm trying to say is don't knock it till you try it.

BTW the fiero was killed in 1988. The 1989 version was to have the better 3.1 V6, similar styling to the 91-92 Trans Am, updated suspension, and updated interior. The Cadillac Allante was finally redone right in 93. Everything but the body was redone. What happened? GM killed them both when they finally got them right. That the type of thinking that got GM in trouble. Now that GM owns 25% of Subaru what are they doing? Stealing the design of the suspension (not exotic but cheap and effective) and the 4EAT trans and adapting them to suit new GM products. What are they going to do for Subaru?

Stop the presses....

Today I got not one, but TWO Autoweeks at the same time and this SSR Chevy pickup/cruiser/sports car/hotrod on the cover really got my attention! (don't look Randy...it's yellow) In the other issue, we have none other than Mr. Lutz hizself, sitting in a Pontiac Solstice showcar that is made up from GM's parts bin, and looks GREAT! In my humble opinion, the coupe looks much better than the new Z....

....GO BOB LUTZ....GO BOB LUTZ....GO BOB LUTZ....GO BOB LUTZ... Don

Cool

True confessions time.

OK - I admit it. I actually like the Impala/Caprice models. Never have so few changes to a taxicab turned it into a BIG sexy cruiser. I also (sorry, this isn't easy) like the current Impala. It has a certain badassness about it, especially in black or maroon.
There - I said it. However, sanity was never my strong suite.
Ron.

I have always liked the Chey Impala SS (the black ones)....there are 5 in Oz (one was advertised for $55,000AU in December) ....and I saw one on Wednesday evening...awesome evil looking car.

I also like the Mark VIII...and Thunderbird...and the Camaro......
