You should not buy one unless you are in love with one.

I think a transmision replacement is some where between $2000 and $4000.
the transmision lists from subaru
part #31000AB860R1 for $2,824.86
with a core refund
part #31000AB860C1
$1,200.00 plus laber.

Wheel bearings are about $400.00 to replace.
I think the parts are around $100.00 (bearing and seals)

now if you replace the transmsion with a 5 speed it mite be cheeper. I know some members have done it for around $1000, but they did all of the work them self.

Even with its problums SVX are great and I will not sell mine.
Its nice to have a car that turns heads

I hate to put it this way. If you are questioning the cost of repair on a SVX, you should not get one. The cost of maintaining one is high. Once maintained well, they will serve you for a long time.

What do you like about it?

Have you considered the svx's competitors? 300zx, supra, rx7, etc.

If you're worried about the tranny and bearings I'd say don't buy one.

Reasons:

#1 Uniqueness - You don't see many of these cars, they really turn heads.
#2 Comfort - As my daily driver, I couldnt be pleased w/ the comfort factor of this vehicle. For this reason I can also tolerate the automatic transmission (which is actually very sporty. 3rd gear tops off at 120mph.)
#3 Capability - The EG33 powerplant is one of Subaru's most perfected engines running at 97% Volumetric effieciency. This gives plenty of low end tourqe for enjoyable cruising w/ good mileage.

I will finish by saying that this car does require patience and money. Plenty of both. BTW. I think most members will agree when I say that 98% of SVX's are projects in work.

Hope this info helps! It's nice to see people interested in these cars.

Good luck in your decision and outcome!

I'd have to agree with Lwin. If you're questioning the repair costs, then this may not be the best car for you. If you need an awd car that's cheap, reliable and fun to drive, I'd suggest looking at mid to late 90's 5spd Imprezas...

i call B.S. on all the high maintenance horror stories. if you buy a beat '92 with 100,000+ miles on it for $1500, yeah, sure.

buy a nicely maintained late model SVX - mine has been the cheapest, most reliable car i've owned as far as repairs. if you do your homework when buying the car, as you have researching it, you will do OK.

If treated right and not beaten the SVX will serve you well. I have only had to do routine things to my car. Tires, brakes, TRANNY COOLER, ect . Any car will fall apart if not treated right...remember that.

I must admit my baby's still treating me good ....I've put 14,000 miles on it no wheel bearing issues, and tranny still shifts the same from when I bought it. ...............and I drive it pretty hard.

But - I've always wanted an SVX and I finally got one. Went from an 89 Toyota MR2 -> 99 Infiniti G20 -> 92 SVX....the SVX is definitely the best car I've had, and the MR2 I thought was more fun to drive than the G20 ....G20 was all show no go "get a piece" mobile.

The SVX is expensive to maintain but it's my dream car and I'll pay....so yeah - unless you love the car I don't think you should buy one.

SVX owners KNOW their cars - or at least I think so. I've never met another owner that I didn't have at least a 10 minute conversation with. One of which a local police officer - that was a very interesting scenario.

I have to agree with you. The SVX is my dream car and worth every penny I put into her.

I tell my wife that she's my 'call girl' - if I treat her like a $0.50 ho' then she'd just f*** me over and send me packing. But treat her like a high class broad, and well...she'll leave you purring for more!
