Here in Australia there is a Government tax on petrol. We had some dubious dealers buying bulk toluene, tax free, and mixing it with low octain fuel to make preimum, and big profits too.

This works ok, but the Government didn't think so.

Put a gallon in the tank when nearly empty, and then fill up immediately with gas.

4 to 1

Soobie,

The guy that Lee quotes who did all the work checking out various solvents, he only used a quart to a tankfull. A gallon to a tankfull is four times as much.

I reckon if you are only doing it as a once-off to clean injectors, intake etc, then it should not matter too much if you use more than enough.

If you were going to put a gallon of toluene in the tankfull every week, then you might want to read that analysis again. It's just possible continued high exposure could damage some of the rubber or nylon components in your engine or fuel tank.

Joe

No no no this is a one time deal. i just want to see if this will help out my hesitation. I have asked various mechanics and all have said to clean the injectors or run cleaner through them. This is the best way i can get them real clean. Ive had a number of people on the network tell me about toulene but never searched it. I will try this on friday and see what happens.

Best of luck with it then. It really can't hurt, and it is very possible it will improve driveability, particularly if the cause of your problem is gumming up and carbonisation.

Question So... how much do I add?

So far I've read 6:1 (gas/tolue) 17:1, and 18gal: 1 quart.

What is the proper amount to mix?

You would need to make your own choice based on the information put forward in the thread. There is no "correct amount", no manufacturer's recommendation.

If it's one-off cleaning capability you want, a gallon to a full tank is as close as you will get to a workable solution. And you still carry your own risk if anything goes wrong.

yeah, they make a very good product, but IMO tends more to treatment on the lube side vice cleaning of fuel passages - regardless of advertsing.

www.auto-rx.net (transmissions)

and

www.auto-rx.com (oil)

or try these guys for a simliar set of products.

I should advise everyone to have proper funnels handy and to practice pouring into them.

I spilled a couple ounces onto the ground and a drop or two splashed onto the car and myself.
Wah.

Drove til the gas light was going on and off (going up or downhill made it go away), hit the gas station, poured in a couple "glugs" of Dexron 3, realized my tranny funnel was WAY too small, drove to the next Chevron, bought a bigger funnel, poured in the Xylene, froze my arse off, filled up with 90, poured in 4 ounces or so Marvel Mystery.

13.1 miles to home no perceivable change in operation.

If....

Nik

If your intake is gummed up with varnish, and the xylene cleans it, there will be a difference in ease of tickover. If your intake is already squeeky clean, there will be no difference at idle.

If you put in enough xylene to raise the RON rating of the fuel, you will get more power, as the knock sensors will not be retarding. I think your ECU has to learn the higher fuel rating, and I'm guessing [wildly] it will need a tankfull to learn this.

Also, you need to employ the full rev range for the computer to learn new values. This will mean that you have to hold lower gears and hammer it so the computer learns there is no need to retard.

Try that and see if there's a difference.

If not, I can only imagine you are already able to buy high-grade fuel that uses all the fuel map has to give. If so, you're lucky, we have rubbish petrol here in Ireland.

Joe

I dont think you'll notice immediate results. It will probably take a tankful for you to notice anything.

I picked up a gallon of xycol (sp?) this morning, and poured in half of it, then filled up my tank.

So far it might seem a tiny bit smoother, but I could be totally wrong.
