It all has to do with the tuning of the engine. The timing advance assumes combustion at a certain rate, and using a different octane will change that rate. This is one thing that causes detonation ("pinging"). The fuel does not combust properly because the timing advance makes the spark plugs fire at the inappropriate time for that specific octane's rate of combustion. With enough detonation, your internals will suffer from one type of damage or another.
This is a slightly inaccurate description of what will happen if you put regular fuel in an SVX. Lower octane fuel ignites more easily, and in a high-compression engine like the EG33, the fuel can ignite just from temperature and pressure alone, before the spark plug would ignite it. That's called detonation, and it's not difficult to figure out how it's bad for an engine.

The knock sensors, however, will detect this. The ECU will start cutting fuel and spark to try to eliminate the problem.

The end result is the same. Don't put regular fuel in the SVX. Yes, there are more modern cars that can adapt to regular fuel even though they say 'use premium only.' The SVX is not so adaptable.

Price of Premium has gone up to about $2.11 here in central VA. In some parts of Washington DC it's almost $3!!!

Someone is definitely getting rich off of our hard earned money!

WooHoo! Just put gas in the SVX. Ran me $2.01/gallon of 93 octane. Still sucks to be paying that much but it is still a damn sight cheaper than whay y'all all paying!

Right, but how many dozens of times would you have to drive around your little island before you had to fill the tank?

Yeah, kinda typical

When I drive the SVX, it usually goes 400km on 34Litres, but when my wife has it (ok,ok she IS allowed to use it....sometimes) it consumes 45Litres at 400km .....
(Wonder how she manages that)

It's $2.149 at Sam's Club here. Sam's is usually 6-10 cents cheaper than everywhere else.
All I can say is that it's a great thing than Penny gets 30 mpg on the hwy, 21-23 in town. Hopefully adding z-max will help as well.

Gas Prices

Hi everyone, Sunday 5/9/04 I fill my wifes car with regular at 1.84.9. Fast forward to Monday 5/10.04. Going past the same station as the day before. 2.08.9 a gallon for regular. WILL IT NEVER END! Take care, BOBB

P/S Years ago, when I traveled for a company that provided a car and gas, the first big price jumps took place. The company sent out a letter that we were to show gas stations were we got gas so they would givve us a deal. The letter said we were using our cars for business and should get gas when we asked for it. DOH! How lame can you get. "B"
