Why ??

I'm begining to come off my "Reading high." I started wondering what is it about this car that brings such a varied and diverse group together. We have 70 year olds (Preston, on the Yahoo site). We have 16 year olds, and everyone in-between. We have married people with kids (Randy & Shari). We have single people looking to hook up (Greenmarine & Kelli). We have drinkers (Ron) and tea-totalers (Rosie). We have people who want to modify the SVX to make it go faster, handle better, and brake quicker. We have people who want to keep it stock. We have people who want to change its looks and people who cherish its looks. We have different races, creeds, cultures and religions. Heck we even have some agnostics, and atheists. We have rich people and poor people. We have people that own Porsches & Lamborghinis. We have people that own minvans and SUVs. We even have people that don't have their SVX anymore that remain SVXers at heart. We have people that haven't gotten an SVX yet that are also SVXers at heart.

The SVX was not a great happening in the automotive world. It is not a Dusenburg. It is not a Bugatti. Heck it ain't even a VW bettle. It barely caused a ripple on the automotive scene. It was produced in miniscule numbers and was considered a flop. It is not the fastest, best handling, most pretty, most confortable, least expensive, etc, etc. There are other cars that are better all around performers.

So what is it? Are all our lives so pathetic that we come togeter to be in a "group?" Are we all really nerds? Is this car "the greatest thing since sliced bread?" I have thought about this alot and have not been able to come up with a definitive answer. So I'm throwing the question out to all SVXers. Maybe our collective brain cells(soaked in alcohol or tea) can find the real reason that we come together. I eagerly await all the replys.

On topic, I think the combination of excellent '80s sports/luxury styling, a supremely comfortable and well-appointed interior, an aspirational powertrain and drivetrain layout, very decent performance, and finally rarity all work together to make this a very desireable car for many people.

It has the flared fenders, wide-short lighting, window-in-windows, squat stance, and "what is that?" look going for it that seperates it from anything else on the road. Remove the few badges, and almost no one would know what it was.

This side of a 911 Carrera, you will not find another car with a DOHC 24V 6-cylinder boxer engine, much less so with AWD. Even though they were all automatics, the 230HP still allows 0-60 in about 7.0. Not a Vette, but then, everyone knows what a Vette is.

I could go on, but really, we all know what "it" is that makes us love these cars, and "it" is likely different for many of us.

For me, it is definitely this car´s soul and charisma. I am the one who want it as much stock as can to feel it in its purity. Of course it is Subaru! All this we share with each other, pain and joy owning it.
For me there are cars with similar soul and charisma - Aston Martin DB9 (or 7), Jaguar XJ220 - but I will never have one...:-)

Considering I have owned or been 'involved' (kid's cars, etc.) with now my 11th Subaru since 1981, I think the SVX is the 'ultimate' Subaru. They may have built faster (WRX) and more luxurious vehicles ('loaded' Outback) since, but nothing yet delivers the whole 'package' like the SVX has.

I honestly have no idea why. Personally, my interest in owning a SVX has been kinda "It would be nice to have, but there are other cars that I would rather own right now" but for some reason I stuck around here. But now, I am prolly gonna go look at one next week. Why I stuck around here I have no clue, but I did. I'm hopin to have some sort of good news within a week or 2.

I wholeheartedly agree. I love Subarus for what they are, but I love the SVX for being something entirely different. Inexplicably, Subaru went after the luxury touring market and made the best car they could. And what a car it is.

I first saw the car at a '91 Baltimore auto show. I uttered those immortal words, looked at the price sticker, endured the shock; & moved on. Being as rare as they are, I don't remember seeing another one until I spotted those funny windows again on a pearlie parked in a supermarket lot about 6 years later. I commented to my wife, "Hmmm....I wonder what them things are goin' for lately"? Her response - "Don't ask, we can't afford rocket ships". Three years or so after that, I got a home computer & bopped around in Yahoo car ads. Holy crap! They're giving these things away! I joined the Yahoo site. I read all the tales of woe & financial ruin experienced by half the members there. There was a guy called are-dub-jay who got screwed by auto mechanics for a living. But, he stuck with the car. Now he's stuck with two of 'm.

Yes....it takes a certain breed, if you will, of die-hards who aren't easily discouraged when mechanical things crap out on them, because when things are running right, the car is like taking in a gorgeous sunset at the beach after perhaps getting bogged down in the sand on the way to the view.
There are no age, sex or financial limitations imposed upon good taste, & a flair for the unusual.

Damn two hours ago my mechanic told me I have engine problem, seems crankcase bearing. Estimeted cost - 2000 bucks. Ask my why I love this car again....
