I am a pessimistic optimistic. I think the worst is going to happen, that way when it does, i don't feel as bad, but if the best happens, i am twice as happy.

Paul, your 2 cents is worth more like a nickel.

Entry number 3 for the definition of 'Gay' in my thick Oxford American Dictionary and Thesaurus (published last year) reads 'a homosexual, esp. male'. This text however did not indicate any derogatory meaning to the word 'gay'. However 'queer' in the same text is referenced as a derogatory word.

It's a pity that every word used has to be P.C. (vs. M.a.c.).

Funny you mentioned that Shelfy. I was just thinking about the double standard that many people have.

'Straight' has been used in a derogatory way with negative connotations.

Being straight and exploring different bars and clubs, I've heard it many times in Atlanta used in that fashion. I've heard it in 'Backstreets' (If not the oldest, one of the oldest gay clubs in Atlanta) used to belittle the straight patrons in the club.

The first time I went into a lesbian bar, they wouldn't serve me because either I was a man or because I was straight. After a friend of mine showed up, apparently she was a regular, they warmed up to me and thought I was alright.

What's interesting is the double standard. I have friends that are gay, both male and female. The lesbians occasionally but the words are common such as 'slut' or 'b1tch' when they are upset with each other. I heard gay men on more than one occasion refer to each other as f@gs and I've heard the statement 'You are just so gay.' in a negative and angry sense. So is it ok for a homosexual person to call another homosexual a 'f@g'?

Atlanta is truly a strange place.

If we are ever to become equally recognized, let's stop classifying ourselves. We are Americans. Period.

As for straight being used in a derrogatory form, I have been told to go straight to he11. I'm offended by that.
You know what's funny Randy? I wonder how many people actually feels that 'black' and 'african american' are not P.C. (vs. M.a.c.). Of all the (umm..should I call them blacks, african americans, or the brownish americans?) that I know and the ones that I've brought up that issue on do they feel if the mentioned words offend them in any particular way or if they feel that it is PC (not mac) or not, they really don't care either way and being referred as any of them does not bother them one bit. They said it doesn't bother them. Maybe I've only been in contact with the minority or because I live in Atlanta (city of people released from 'the home' ).

Then again I use derogatory words just to see how people would react for fun and I do keep the company of some of the strangest people (i.e. self-proclaimed ethocentric anti-semitic jews, anti-asian asians, etc.). A fun bunch I might add.

Thank god for the Reagan administration!

So, we have to ask ourselves, how are they getting by with "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy?" Plus, sheesh, the things the "fab five" call each other on the show (not that I watch it with regularity and not that there's anything wrong with that and --- oh he11, if we gotta start disclaiming everything we say, we're gonna need a whole he11uvalot more bandwidth! ). Oh, and please, take he11 off the sh*t list.

i certainly don't mind being called 'white'. am i the color of whole milk? no. are 'black' people the color of ebony? no. its just a **** of a lot easier to say, as opposed to 'caucasion european-americans' or 'afrocentric people of color'.

they are just descriptive words, folks! one word is a lot easier than a whole paragraph.

Something that needs to be explained to me:

H e l l

Can someone tell me why it's offensive?

In this day and age hasn't the word become a simple description?

How about the word 'stupid'? I mean I want to be politically correct. Is it politically correct to call a stupid person stupid? If it is politically correct to call someone stupid, is it because the stupid people are too stupid to be offended or are they desensitized to the word because of commonly used the word is to describe them?

Who dictates political correctness? Can I join their board?

I hate words, can't we just draw s!tick figures to get points across? We did it well back in prehistoric days, let's revert!

Degeneration is the only way!

Harry (stupid politically correct degenerate - aka: P.C. pc user)

I write!

I write print copy (ads, brochures, capabilities collateral).

I write web copy.

I write radio commercials.

I write Television commercials.

I write Video scripts (corporate training and capabilities).

On video scripts, I write two scripts at once. One one side of the page, I write what people say -- on the other side, I write what people see. That goes to the producer/director to be translated into video -- from the shoot, to the edit.

Most of the time, concept starts with me. Other times, basic concept comes from the client or a BS session ("brainstorming" ) and I translate it into the written word.

So now, you know why I'm usually in my own little world. People tend to steer clear of us "creative types" until they REALLY need us.

edit: Oh, I write for this company www.fireandrain.com . That's also my voice on the various video samples (except for maybe one, can't remember -- but, most).
