Update: Day 9

I'm counting business days, this time, so I won't go too crazy.

Finally broke down and called the shop (they've been silent since I dropped it off). Having another SVX to drive makes it a lot easier not to get anxious.

The owner of the shop said that he doesn't think the tranny, itself is to blame. He test drove it and it operated flawlessly -- UNTIL, he took it out on a four-lane and gave it gas to go into traffic. Then -- NADA! He said he let it sit for a while, did some business, went back and, voila! It ran perfectly, again.

He then, took it out for a similar drive, with the guage attached, and the same thing happened. It just simply lost pressure after it warmed up. He says he thinks it may be a solenoid. He's looking for solenoids and a Valve Body and he's going to change these things to see if that takes care of it. If not, he says, he thinks there may be a "crack" somewhere that opens when the tranny warms up -- causing the sudden pressure drop.

Of course, I'm wondering to myself: if it's a solenoid, why am I not getting a flashing power light? If there's a crack, why not a visible leak? Even when there was a breach in the seal between the front diff and the tranny, there was still no pressure loss. Why was there no slippage, prior to the "Flare" and the total loss of pressure?

So many questions.

You ask good questions and I still suspect a blockage of some sort.

Here's hoping it gets resolved quickly, though. And that he's not damaging your clutches too badly with all this testing (slipping).

He said he checked the fluid and it's of good color and not burnt. Again, there was no slippage besides the flare (when I drove it, anyway). He also said there was no slippage prior to the complete pressure loss. Argh!

Oh you know those solenoid valve things do not have to fail electrically to stop working. Lets see... When the throttle gets punched the line pressure is supposed to go to the max. This means the power to the solenoid is turned off because when there is no electric power the default (limp home mode) is max line pressure. So one of the other solenoids (as in shift 1 or 2) is poping open when the line pressure goes up and then it sticks open. This drops all the line pressure to the clutches. Well anyway it sounds good from here.

Hey Doug,
nice to be back.
I'm doing well and the bmw is doing just fine.
she's come thru the past 2 winters with flying colors. I LOVE ALL WHEEL DRIVE!!!!!!!!!! SINCE THE SVX SHOWED ME THE WAY, I'll never stray from all wheel drive.
I'll never lease again though. I haven't been driving her much due to the fact that I'm not even in my second year and I'm over in mileage by 5k miles. It's going to hurt when my lease is up.
How are things w/you?

Day 27

I'm not counting the two days on the weekend. Monday, the 15th of March was the first "business" day. I'm averaging, basically, a month, every time I drop the car off at this place.

Dropped by today to check on progress and lo and behold, "Patience" was sitting at the bay door, looking like she was getting ready to be pulled in.

As usual, I walk into the bay area and everyone takes off in the opposite direction. Finally, the fellow who does most of the valve body work (and dealt with me lots in the past) comes over to me. He tells me that Dave (the owner) has had her out but, still isn't pleased with the way she's operating (they've had the tranny out and done "something" with it), so he wants it checked over again. As luck would have it, Dave was out to lunch and he was the only one that knew what was going on, so, I just told them to tell him to call me with an update.

Meanwhile, here it is a week before the meet and now "The Evil Twin" has rediscovered her intermittent starting problem that she had when I first bought her. The problem disappeared after I installed a new battery, but, it seems to be rearing its ugly head again. I guess I need to go to Beav's "I put a relay between the starter and ignition switch" (or, something like that) thread and figure out how to do that. Trouble is, I've got to go out of town for Easter, so, tomorrow will be my only chance to do the work. GRRRRR.

Damn, Randy. I this works out for you. A bummer if they can't have it ready for you in time for the meet. We're pulling for you!

I have a starting problem that easy to fix. I just push the shifter forward and it starts.

That's the FIRST thing I tried.

Cleanded the throttle body today. Noticed that the piece of 2x8 I had under my Optima had it sitting too high and the bolts from the pos. terminal had worn through the insulation. I removed the lumber and replaced it with the plastic bracket that came with the battery (that I didn't have with me at the time of the wooden emergency measure). Maybe that had something to do with it. We'll see.

Six days! I'm beginning to get torqued.
