Hello, my name is Jason and I am an ADDICT.

Addicted to the Subaru Select Monitor.

I love it. I can hook it up and go driving and it shows me EVERYTHING. Trans solenoid percentages, engine parameters, everything in REAL time, graphable or numeric... I can hold, I can save, I can print.... it's like a DRUG!! I can watch the solenoids go crazy when I punch it into power mode! I can look at the percentages of fresh vs. recirculated air when I change the fan speed on the air conditioning! I am all-seeing and omnipotent!

Drugs are baaad, mmkay?

It looks like this...

http://www.tsl-motorsport.co.uk/servicing/monitor.jpg

It's the blue-edged thing in the upper left of the pic. It's a handheld scanner that every Subaru dealer has... we have two here. It can be used for a variety of things, from electronic diagnosis of the motor and transmission, to controlling the ABS system manually... you can even use it as a high end multimeter and as an ocilloscope. It also has the capability to execute reflashes on Subaru ECMs if it has the appropriate reflash cartridge. Very cool stuff.

When I plug up to my SVX one of the systems I can monitor and control is "4WS"... hehe, we all know what that means. Apparently the stock USDM ECM has the ability to control such a system if it is present.

I thought the ECU had to be OCBD (or some such anacronism) in order to get those reading and that our ECU's were not the right type. If I am wrong on that then it is good news for the eventual day that I install a car-pc and tap into the system to display all that fun info.

So.... Ah.... Porter How about getting some data on the transmission temperature reading. That would be nice. Can you get a plot of temperature verse time or engine speed or SOMETHING? Please

How much for one of those monitors?

It's very fortunate all the monitors have the same software. Otherwise our UK dealer would never have been able to fix our JDM 4WS SVX.

The 4WS has it's own separate ECM between the rear speakers which you would need if you wanted to retrofit it to your USDM car.

Which connector(s) does the monitor plug into? Do you have any information on how it communicates with the car's control units?I'm wondering if it's possible to connect a laptop computer to the same connector(s) and extract the data.

Phil.

Could you please see what happens with the Lock-up control solenoid as the tranny warms-up and gets hot and then REALLY hot? You have to keep it out of lock-up for this by staying on the gas.

you can do that already (and save alot of money) with:

1. a temp gauge
2. your watch
3. your tachometer
4. some graph paper
5. a pencil

If 100 of us chip in $10 apiece we could own one of these gadgets and pass it around the network as needed.

Any chance that one of the networkers who work for a Subaru dealership could obtain this unit at a discounted price?
