Gas Tank Farting? Help!

Hey SVX'ers! Wondering why the gas tank (at least I thinks that's where it's coming from) makes a gargle (bubbly sound) when I'm about to start the car when its only warm or hot. Again, as mentioned, it only happens when the car is either hot or warm. Sometimes I just have to turn the ignition without starting the car and I begin to hear garrgling sound which eventually subsides after a few seconds. I've also noticed that the gas cap leaks a lot of air when removed when warm at the gas station. Could they be related is that normal? It it the gas cap? Trust me it's not from the previous meal that I just ate! Any ideas? Post away!

There should be some pressure that is released when you take the gas cap off. The other thing you may be hearing is the fuel pump. It is located in the fuel tank, and when the key is turned on or off, it may change the pressure on the gas line and that is what is making the sound. Someone else may have some better ideas, but I don't think that it is something you need to worry about.

Unhappy I don't want to scare you, but....

my car used to gurgle when started until I replaced the head gaskets. That problem is gone now.

A couple of questions for you. What does your coolant overflow bottle look/smell like? It should be nice and white inside. If you've got any dark, gooey, burnt smelling substance on the inside of the bottle, you may have a more serious problem. Has the car EVER overheated?

Mine has done that since the day I bought it 2 years ago. Don's (my neighbor) does it too. I noticed it the day I bought the car, called the subaru dealer, and they said it was normal, and was the nature of the fuel pump.

I've never had the petroleum flatulence of which you speak. Both of mine are 92's. Mike's is a 95. What year is yours JLittell? Perhaps it's a characteristic of the later models.

We're discussing gas gas? Isn't that a bit redundant?

I noticed the gargle on my 97 too.

Sounds like the workings of the fuel pump to me.

As long as it keeps working, I'm happy!!

Nothing smells. It sounds like it's a common thing with the SVX. Now I have an excuse when I'm in the car with my wife!...:That wasn't me...It was the fuel pum...!" Thanks All for the feedback!

That's the only thing I don't like about leather seats: You can't "bury one" for timed release.

It sounds exactly like a Cappuccino machine... Not the gas station kind, the Starbucks kind.
