JDM Factory OEM HIDs

A few months ago I bought these headlights. They claim to be OEM HIDs from Japan. I didn't know they existed. They look genuine to me. Has anyone else ever heard of these?

Re: JDM Factory OEM HIDs

No I don't think so. They look like normal JDM lights with a HID kit fitted.
The second Pict, the one on right, you can see where the standard wiring goes in the side of the cover, and the kit wiring in the back.

Harvey.

Re: JDM Factory OEM HIDs

Hey Harvey!
I went and looked at the backs of the headlights again. They don't look like they're aftermarket. The back caps that house the bulbs have two wires coming from the bottom edge that go to the main connector, same as the regular JDM, UK (which I also have), etc.. But then there's three rubber boots in the flat, rear part of the cap. Two small ones with one wire coming out of them and one larger one in the middle with two wires coming out of it. These wires, outside of the cap, all have separate connectors that connect to the wiring for the ballasts. Also, Sun Powerview is approved as OEM equipment in Japan. Could it be that Subaru used these HIDs in the SVX towards the end of it's production?
The photos I posted were from the advert. I'll take some other photos myself and perhaps get a better view.

First known use of HIDs on cars was 1991, so it's possible.

If you post a picture of the back of the projector itself, that will be the giveaway. If it has a D2S style bulb fitting, then it's OE. If it's just a standard H series type bulb, it's aftermarket.

Re: JDM Factory OEM HIDs

Japan uses H1 bulbs.

I have had one of my suppliers in Japan ask about HID's for the Alcyone while sorting some other parts for me and nothing is listed as a spare part or ever being an option.
I have never come across one in Japan with factory HID's in 14 years of business importing cars and parts.

The kit in the picture is an after market off the shelf item widely sold in Japan.
It is a very good kit though and the company are OEM approved for replacement parts so it's as near factory as can be I guess.

Re: JDM Factory OEM HIDs

Yeah, they're H1 fittings. Oh well, at least look like they're OEM. And they should be brighter than the H1 bulbs. I also found 21w super whites for the running/parking lights!

Don't forget, since the headlights are setup for RHD cars, the beam pattern is backwards. You'll blind oncoming cars if you use these.

I'll just point the beams down a little, like I did when I had my UK lights on.

May not be as easy as that since the RHD version is designed to throw some light toward the road shoulder which is to the left. LHD version would throw to the right....

In short; you're throwing light at oncoming traffic. Lowering the beam may not be an issue in built-up areas but could limit your visibility on dark roads.

My ten cents.

Re: JDM Factory OEM HIDs

Well, I could go with my original plan, which is to disassemble the UK lights and install the US projectors, and use the HIDs from the JDM set.
