Question Just bought SVX n driveable for 2 weeks.

Just bought my first SVX. I had it for two weeks n im bak off the road. Expected work for an almost 20 year old ride.
Week 1- Four lights on dash. Merry Christmas! Thanks for the gift. Needed help to fabricate a alternator replacement harness. Thanks Sabin. Bak on road but need alternator upgrade.
Week 2- Check engine lite on expressway popped on for less than 10 secs, no other happening. Alternator upgrade. On a tight budget of course. $40-45 bucks at most. A day later 70 mph n the check engine lite jumps on and acceleration goes, then brakes and powersteerin.
After recieving an accurate acoustic diagnoses from my Pops. It was discovered that my timing belt was shredded.
An estimate of $1200 for parts n labor by a Subaru dealer. Ye i dont have those type of chips. N im not to savvy under the hood, but $1200 is encouragement enuff to become savvy.
So my radiator n fans are out of my car along with the timing belt covers. I was wondering if n e one knew where to get the replacement seals for the timing belts covers? I found where to get the belt, the pulleys, the tensioner, and the tensioner adjuster for decent pricing.

It was my understanding that the seals for the timing belt covers were kind of pointless and only serve to trap leaking oil from the cam seals in the timing belt compartment.

Not true...
Keep out dirt, water, all kinds of stuff.
The cam seals keep out the oil.

Re: Just bought SVX n driveable for 2 weeks.

Welcome the forum, and the fun that is SVX.

What alternator upgrade did you do for $45-$50?

Tell us about your new ride. What year, what color, millage, got some pics?

Shredded the timing belt..well that is just no fun at all.

There are seals for the timing belt covers? I am pretty sure mine has none. We talking about the plastic covers?

Re: Just bought SVX n driveable for 2 weeks.

Well when we find the part numbers let me know.
I am going to need them I guess. I got some used side cover cause mine has a crack in it, one more thing to replace someday...

Ah the upgraded wire mod, was hoping we found some cheap rewind shop for $50, lol.

That's cool the person you sold the car to is on the forum now. ...sucks its for a shredded timing belt.

Don't feel bad sVx, after I bought my SVX I had to have the valve cover gaskets and other work done, set me back $1200.
See here: http://www.subaru-svx.net/forum/showthread.php?t=54555

My last car was an Impreza and every time something under the hood broke it cost $1000 minimum... so nothing new here.

Re: Just bought SVX n driveable for 2 weeks.

I have been running mine without them for over 6 months now. One of the nuts on the inside that held the back of the cover against the engine had apparently vibrated loose and fell to the bottom of the cover and got caught in an idler pulley causing the pulley to seize and shred the timing belt. I left them off after I replaced the camshaft that it had caused damage to. The timing mark that is on the cover was wore off by the cam sprocket rubbing it. Luckily the arrow on the sprocket points straight up when the timing marks are lined up.
