This looks interesting.

I may look into this in the near future.

I am already working on fitting a Phase II transmission and computer. w/ a little more work it will be just fine. Particular models were built to be capable of paddle shifting... Hence the effort to make it work

Tom
I understand that the phase II is a much better transmission.

But swapping out the whole trans, TCU and wiring is a whole lot more time, effort and money than a simple TCU mod like Ryan has done.

Oh of course... This is really cool and am not trying to defer from it at all. I was waiting for when you would be doing this, looks like someone beat you to it

Not to hi-jack, but how long will low mileage transmission from 1990-1998 be around? Why spend as much to rebuild them when you can get a better used trans for less? That was my thinking at least.

Re: Cool TCU mod

According to Pat, who works on my transmissions, the later 4EAT type [I can't say if it is known as Phase II] does not have the brake band that operates 2 and 4 range. It has clutches for everything.

He seems to prefer it. His words: "It gives less trouble"

If all these transmissions use similar firmware, then maybe it will be just as possible, if not necessarily easy, to reprogram the later type to accept paddle changes.

What occurs Tom if you were going this route it might be simpler to transplant a full gearbox plus TCU controller plus steering wheel from a Legacy with steering wheel change buttons. No?

I wonder how Darren is getting on with his project.

Not happening, Phil, unfortunately.

I contacted Darren before JAE. A couple of things changed the landscape; (i) Darren had an accident during the year, and is slowly recovering; (ii) when the [accident damaged] Legacy B4 from Japan arrived with the tiptronic box, he was made an offer for the car complete that he could not refuse.

In addition, Darren says he wants to retain the originality of the CXD he has, and you could not really blame him there because it looks to be a really nice one.

So it's up to you mate for the moment.
