coolant capacity?

I'm going to do a coolant system flush soon but since I don't have an owner's manual I don't know capacity (to get the 50-70% antifreeze/water ratio).

Also, anything specific I should do, or just go by the instructions on the Prestone bottle?

Thanks!

Re: coolant capacity?

Last time I flushed my coolant it was about a full jug of anti-freeze and a about 1-1/4 jug of water.

Yeah that's close.

If the system is completely drained, I add a gallon of AF to the radiator, then remove the top hose from the rad, and use the hose to add water to the block untill it's full. Re-attach the hose, then run the car with the radiator cap off and keep adding water as it takes it in. Put the cap on before you stop the car.

I've found that procedure to be the quickest way to ensure that you have all the air out.

Since I don't live in Canada or Alaska and don't have to deal with temps below 0*, I like to run it with more water than 50/50.

Also my way does it without having to deal with buckets or extra jugs, I'm lazy and clumsy, the less I have to deal with it the less chance of spilling it

Re: coolant capacity?

Okay I thought this would be easier than it was.

Is the drain cock the little plastic piece you can turn at the far corner bottom of the passenger side? Has a little fitting on it that looks like you could attach some tubing or something. I loosened it a couple of turns and after some leakage around it, eventually I got the coolant to come out of the fitting:

But at this rate after 15 minutes it had only drained about an inch into a gallon milk jug. Is this supposed to be an all day draining process?

Ultimately I got impatient and loosened it some more, in doing so coolant sprayed everywhere with every turn as it leaks out between parts of the drian area. Eventually I got it loosened enough to where it would shoot straight down into an oil pan, and at a fast enough rate that the radiator was drained in a few minutes. Only a gallon came out though.

Re: coolant capacity?

Yeah, you only drained the rad, not the engine. I don't mess with that valve and just take off the bottom radiator hose. With the car on ramps, there's room for a 5 gallon bucket to catch it all.

It may a little slow coming out of the engine, because of the thermostat being closed.
