RED HOT behind left precat...
... after idling for 5 minutes. Somethings up with my car. I can't figure it out. Let me just bullet all my symptoms and we can go from there.
-Exhaust note sounds grauggy (like a small pickup with straight pipes, louder but lower toned) after warming up -lost of power after the exhaust note changes to mentioned above -code 37 -running hot on the left exhuast (all white on the inner walls of exhaust) -looping idle at times -weak idle other times At first I thought it was something to do with my cats. So I switched my precats and main with my other SVX which I know is perfect. Turns out it act the same as before. Code 37 did pop up after awhile too (these are the O2s from the other car, not the same ones). I did reset the computer to clear trouble codes before this. As for the driving experience, when I let it sit for a day or two then drive it, the exhaust note sounds sooo sweet. Then give it a good warm up, the exhaust starts to sound like crap and power starts fading with a very bad idle. If it was a cat problem, the sound should become more muffled, right? Not mine, it gets more louder. And just recently, I noticed the car smoking a little from the hood when I fired her up in awhile. Behind the driver side precat was glowing red (during the day) while just idling for about 5 minutes. Only the rear part of the precat (the transition from the full size of the precat to the pipe in between the pre and the main) was red hot. Could this be a fuel problem? Running lean on the left side? How can the precats get to that point so quick, so quick the car didn't even warm up yet. Could one of the Gurus on here help me out, PLEASE. Thanks. |

Re: RED HOT behind left precat...
I remember Ricochet had a problem similar that I think ended up being the timing belt jumped a tooth so it was off a little. Did you check the timing?

Re: RED HOT behind left precat...
It is going to be a timing thingie for one side and could be a slipped belt... Don't forget the cam sprocket messed up shaft as well. The marks could all line up and still be out of time. recent thread from, I believe it was a tom show picks of the cam and sprocket parts. Earlier thread by myself describes the pain I went through to work it out.
Good luck, Keith |

Re: RED HOT behind left precat...
yeah, I thought that too. They do line up. So there is a chance of the cam sprocket lining up and still be out of time, interesting.
Well, to tell u the truth, I noticed a tapping sound after I changed my oil seals. It was on the same side as the problem. It would come and go. And sometimes it gets loud. Performance was good till only recently. Has been 6 months since I last heard that tapping, haven't heard it yet since. Could there be a reason in the installation of the oil seals? Like would there be a no-no step as of rotating the crank too much without taking out the spark plugs, or something like that? Or is it all leading to the cam sprocket out of wack thing? Thanks for the feed back. |

Re: RED HOT behind left precat...
Yup driver side. Sorry I too can't stand ordering something on the net and it asks "left or right side". And look I'm doing it too .

Re: RED HOT behind left precat...
possibly didn't get the sprocket ligned up perfect and damaged it tightened it down after you put the seals in.
It would go down hill from there. Hope it works out for you... Keith |

Re: RED HOT behind left precat...
Replacing the left (drivers side) cam shaft is the tough side also.

Re: RED HOT behind left precat...
might get lucky and catch it soon enough to just replace the sprocket but wouldn't bet on it. Continuing to drive it with a problem easily could cause a much worse problem.

BTW, where can I order a new sprocket, in case that is damaged? |
