Have paint code and need advice

I have a black 94 with paint code 235 (black with red flecks). What should I tell the body shop to make sure that I get black paint with the red flecks?

I searched the threads and it seems that some people got green instead of red flecks. There also seems to be some confusion on mica vs. pearl.

Thanks,
Paul

I have sen many many ebony cars and have never seen a black one with green flecks. Click on THIS THREAD for a poll and more info.

As to the difference between Mica and Pearl, the only difference seems to be in name only. In the US the colors were referred to as "Pearl", while in other markets, the term "Mica" was used. The color remains the same

See the Excel chart on SVX color availability in the various markets by clicking HERE

Hope this helps.

You'll love it when you see the new paint...I got dinged and got the driver's side re-painted a couple of months ago. Even though the paint is in great shape on the rest of the car, what a difference!!
By the way, congrats on the new car...24,000 miles is LOW. Maybe Earl has one with lower miles...???
Pics please.

Hey Paul,
Congratulations! Nice car indeed.

Paul, John and I did a lot of research into the available paints worldwide and we came to the conclusion that the standard Ebony paint for the SVX is code 235, which as you note has red mica in the substrate.

Nobody and I mean NOBODY has ever come forward with an SVX that has green flecks from the factory, and said the code on my car is ???.

That's because it does not exist. What probably happened is some shop was asked to mix paint based on a name rather than a code, and mixed a black paint with green mica.

It is one of those SVX enduring legends, like the Japanese twin turbo police model, or like the Power mode adding 80 hp. People quickly pick up on things they would like to believe without any hard evidence. There is no green fleck Ebony paint.

Your code is correct at 235. However your paint shop should ideally be equipped with a spectrum analyser, to ensure the paint mix exactly matches your Ebony. If you unscrew the gas door and give it to a properly equipped paint mixing shop, they should be able to ensure an exact mix. If they can't do this, look elsewhere. Your car is too valuable to mess around with.

Joe

Joe,

That has been my experience as well. Since this "Ebony green-fleck" issue arose, I have checked with a few of the custom high-end restoration/paint shops in the area.

Some of their paint chips had very slight variations in the color within the same paint code, but ALL had the red flecks in the ebony and ALL had the color code 235. There were no other black formulations listed for the SVX.

This was also the case for the paint suppliers to some of these shops. Whether Sikkens, Glasurit, or Dupont, they all were the same color (Black with red flecks)

I bought a spoiler a few years back and it had green flecks in the paint. I don't know if it had been repainted, but it did have the green in it.

Thanks for all the replies. I took the hood, front bumper cover, fin, and upper quarter moldings to get painted.

I got the car at an auction last summer. I don't have the history, but it looks like the car was impounded some time in 1996 and sat since then. The interior is mint, but the paint has seen better days. It is now in my garage on jack stands. The rear control arms are all bent and one of the knuckles had a broken connection point for the stabilzer link - looks like a fork lift or a bad tow job. I did have the car running when I first got it. I only drove it to get some tires (still had the original tires on it) and it was pretty squirly with the bent control arms and broken knuckle. I don't have a lot of time to work on it, but hope to have the car on the road by mid-summer.

Pictures were request, so here they are ... attached are the pictures from the auction place (I haven't take any yet and now some of the body parts are off).

Bee-uuutiful interior.

That will be one lovely car when finished. Remember what I told you about sending the fuel door so they can spectrum analyse the paint. If you are not spraying the whole car, you are running a very high risk of mismatched tone in the panels.

paint issues aside, that car is beautiful. Since it was impounded only a few years after it was bought, im curious as to how many miles are on it...seems youve found a cherry in a lemon suite

The car has just under 24,000 miles. The parts were painted yesterday and it seems as though they got the paint correct just from the paint code. They found in in their ppg book. I didn't have time to get them the gas cap, so I am hoping it will be close enough. I'll be picking them up in a few weeks to see the results.
