AC weirdness

OK, i know the climate control head "chooses" which vents it will use when you pick "Auto" on it. it seemed to act weird this past weekend. i was out of town and for three days the air just came out of the lower (footwell) vents only. it was pretty warm (80-85 deg) and i really wanted some AC on my face, but it wouldn't happen. tried switching around different modes (Recirc, Vent, Econ) and temps. finally after 3 days of this B.S., it comes out through the upper vents. does anybody know the conditions where it would choose the lower vents only? thanks,

Alan

Significant Technical Input
Check under the center of the dash for the mode door motor unit. Square box, almost the size of a pack of cigarettes, usually its mounting screws fall out and it just spins around while dangling.

when you say "under of center of dash", do you mean above the CC unit (remove radio & CC unit), or do you mean under gauge pod? thanks alot for the help - its been some hot weather here lately and the cold toes/sweaty forehead thing wasn't much fun!

linkage

I have this problem regularly. The linkage next to the gas pedal jams up. I reach under there and give it a nudge and it works fine for a few more months. I've tried lubricating it, but to no avail.
