I don't know about finding one in a junk yard. Not many ever seem to have an SVX at least around here, but you might be able to find a good sensor off another member on here. If you do buy a used one I would just try and make sure it is off a low miles car. If I remember right there is a resistance check you can do to make sure the knock sensor is good. I just don't remember the specs. I replace both of mine awhile ago and the only thing I removed was my alternator and the H-6 engine cover so you don't actually have to remove the intake manifold. You just need a few extensions and a wobbly socket. I actually just bought those gaskets about a month ago from my local dealer. He had them in stock and I think I paid like 7.50-8.50 a piece. Hope this helped.

I got mine for around $50 each from Subaruparts.com. I've seen many recommendations that you replace both at the same time, so I went with that but I am not sure that it is necessary. Mine were both old and busted originals so I'm glad I did. Since they age poorly and go on many SVXs, even if you found an SVX at a nearby junkyard the sensor may not be in good shape.

Here's the price from subaruparts.com and the part #:
22060AA031 Knock Sensor $53.96

ok i think i'm looking at the wrong thing then, can someone post a pic or diagram of where the sensors are, and i know where 2 svx's are in a yard near me,and at $4.00 a sensor i can afford a few duds, i would prefer to go new but replacing both new would be 1/13 of what i have totally invested in this car

I also got my knock sensors from subaruparts.com... I think it was about $40 each or something like that. Anyway, I'd just buy a pair of new ones and do it yourself.

You can do it without removing the intake plenum, but you need small, steady hands and a small 10mm wrench. You also need the patience of a saint. I did it, but the rear knock sensor was a bear to get back in; getting it to stand upright, get the bolt into the threads and tighten it down one-handed in VERY confined spaces was tough, but it's doable. I also have skinny hands

Note that to get the sensor out with the 10mm wrench, you'll maybe be able to turn the bolt 1/4 of a turn then have to reposition the wrench with very limited headroom. You'll also maybe get the bolt out 2/3 of the way before you can no longer get the wrench in there... then it's fingertips twirling the bolt until it pops off.

Took me about 90 minutes in total to replace both through the opening after removing the alternator. You might get more clearance if you remove the A/C compressor and move it to the side as well, but I didn't want to mess with all those aluminum hoses!

comparable parts (used)

We have a 1995 motors manual and it states that the knock sensors from the SVX are identical (same part number) as the '95 Impreza (2.2 L engine) and the '90-'95 Legacy. Original Part Number is 22060aa030, which has been allegedly superceded by Part Number is 22060AA031.

There may be other (later) models that match, but our book only goes to 1995.

Legacys and Imprezas are much easier to find in salvage yards than SVX's.

I got mine at autozone for 38.00 a piece... it might pay just to get a new one so you'd never have to go through the agony of replacing them again if the salvaged ones went bad.

I think you might be driving the wrong car for your needs. SVX's don't like budgets and love premium gas.

One of my knock sensors just went bad (getting a CEL), so I'm now shopping for them.

The newer 22060AA031 does indeed supercede the older part.

According to the parts search at SubaruGenuineParts.com, this same part number is also used in:
  • Impreza 1995-1996
  • Legacy 1990-1996
  • SVX 1992-1997
Current prices (8/2007):
  • SubaruGenuineParts.com $52.67 (old P/N redirects to new)
  • SubaruParts.com $54.83 (both old and new P/Ns)
  • Advance Auto Parts lists three:
    1. $43.99, Niehoff Ignition Detonation (Knock) Sensor, P/N WA1709
    2. $86.99, Standard Motor Products Ignition Knock (Detonation) Sensor, P/N KS86
    3. $98.80, GP Sorensen Knock Sensor, P/N KS86
  • AutoZone lists two:
    1. $34.99, Wells / Knock Sensor, P/N SU4988
    2. $34.99, Duralast / Knock Sensor, P/N SU4988 (yes, same # as above)

Code 22

When I start the car cold the CEL light comes on until the engine builds up heat. It's also sluggish on acceleration. Once the light goes out the car performs normally all day.
The stored code is 22, right side knock sensor. I guess I'll just replace both as recommended but could the sensor be detecting something else? I always run on Shell 93 octane.
