update

I got the ecu yesterday from subasteevo and took off early today from work to put it in.
What happened was sad. As soon as I turned the key on the ecu let the smoke out. I could smell it and found that it blew the same pin.
I am off to get full coverage and 5 gallons of gas to torch the car
I only have 4 min left on my cell phone until friday so I can't even call anybody to bich.

You do have a curly one.

One would reason that fuse protection would have prevented a burn out of that magnitude.

The obvious way to trace what is going on is to identify the pin connection involved. Can you describe same in words e.g. position and nature of connector, top, bottom, left, right, 1-9 etc. The idea will be for those with a diagram to investigate the circuit involved.

You have my sympathy, Trevor.

I just took my car for a little drive and despite some rough running and a wonky idle it is alive!
I bet nobody will ever (in a million years) guess what the problem was.

One good thing about getting older is that I only stayed mad at my car long enough to post that I was mad at it. After that my curiosity prevailed and I just had to start testing things.
I started by making several 6' test leads and soldering them to suspected points on the ecu. (so I could test them in the engine bay and against themselves)
Next I did various voltage and resistance test on various circuits. (could someone please provide me a pin-out and schematics for the ecu so I can stop guessing?)
I got a bunch of OK, OK, OK, OK, and then a WTF. I accidentaly probed one of the wires on the MAF that wsn't wired to anything and it was a ground!??! I didn't know whether to be mad, confused or happy in that I found something strange.

What I found:
There was water in the connector for the MAF that was shorting across every terminal. I would have thought that arcing and heat would have vaporised the water or something, but it was shorting my power to the MAF strait to ground. This was melting 1 pin on the ecu. I will identify it as being the smallest connector on the ecu and it will be the o in the X's in the next line (if viewed as holding the ecu in your hand and looking at it's plugs)

XXOXXX
XXXXXX

O Is a solid red wire btw.

Other:
Is the idle hunting and rough running as a result of the ecu needing to learn the car's characteristics? It is not intake leak hunting, but idles at 600 for a bit and then almost dies before going back to 600 rpm. Will it smooth out? I stuck my face in the exhaust pipe's and it smelled really clean. I did note that the drivers bank had more of a regular miss, or pop than the pass side. (remember I have true duals, so this actually means something) The drivers side did about twice the pops of the pass side. I should call a couple of you when I can to let you hear the sound as I don't know how to record and post audio files here.

Well my monitor looks like it's power supply is going out and I better end this while I can see what I am doing.

So, did you get yet another ECU due to the pin being fried in the one you just got? Congrats on figuring out the source of the problem.

Yeah, it certainly sounds like the ECU is "learning". Given everything that has gone on with the car, you might just want to do the "both blue leads into the test connector" clear of the ECU to make absolutely sure you're starting with a clean sheet of paper.

I just fixed my old ecu with a jumper wire and some solder.
I'm not getting any codes yet though. I did a full warm up and a short test drive last night. I will give it another short drive tonight and then take to work tomorrow to see how everything acts.
Wait, aliens don't exist?

Well the ecu did 'learn" after about 60 miles. It is ideling smoothly and quite responsive now. Overall a much better car than it was when it broke down on me last summer.
I have only 76 or so miles on it and am awaiting new motor mounts (wrx) and trans mount (polly filled) before putting any more miles on it.

What's strange is that it feels quick in first, but quicker in second. Of coarse I have nothing other than the butt dyno to go off of so who knows?
